Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

After countless shortlist stories and rumors concerning who would play Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the search for the lead role is finally over, and fittingly the actor is someone who never appeared on any of the aforementioned lists. Deadline reports that Chris Pratt has been tapped to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a character who was born of a human mother and alien father, and is a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. As Guardians features a cast of strange and cosmic characters, Quill was an important role to fill because he will likely act as the audience’s introduction to the vast, unfamiliar Guardians world. Hit the jump for more.

There were plenty of actors rumored for the role that made a lot of sense (John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, etc.), and Deadline notes that Marvel made test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but Chris Pratt actually seems like a perfect fit. His comic timing is excellent as evidenced by his work on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and he’s shown his talent on the dramatic side with Moneyball and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, for which he also proved that he can beef up for a role if need-be.

Looking back on the previous shortlists and taking Pratt into consideration, it’s clear that writer/director James Gunn is planning on injecting a good amount of humor into Guardians of the Galaxy. A rumor surfaced recently that Marvel was looking at possibly tapping Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler to do voice work in the film (one of the guardians is a talking raccoon), so I’m interested to see the tone that Gunn settles on for the finished film.

With the role of Star-Lord secure, Gunn and Marvel now look to filling out the rest of the cast, which includes the powerful Drax the Destroyer, a giant tree named Groot, the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon, and the female lead Gamora. The story is also rumored to involve the villain Thanos. Expect to hear more soon as production gears up to begin later this year. Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

Handled by the right director (I vote Ang Lee), Sentry would be a brilliant stand-alone movie and later tie-in with the Avengers. Two problems with that: (a.) Sentry is of earth, and thus cannot be Quill's father, and (b.) while Comics Marvel doesn't care that it has 100 Superman clones, Cinematic Marvel almost certainly does, as it's actively avoided all of them.
I'd love to see a Sentry movie. He could be even eventually be the villain of an Avengers movie, sort of the Cinematic Marvel U version of Dark Phoenix.

One thing I read that points to Adam Warlock possibly being the dad is:

Adam Warlock is possible but seems pretty extreme. And if he's the son of the Soul Gem, I doubt he'd have any trouble handling the stone he picked up in the movie.

Silver Surfer is owned by Fox so he's out.

Mentor (or even Starfox) sort of fits and is a good way to get the other Titans involved but kinda strange to have him be Thanos' half brother (or nephew).

My initial bet was on one of the Eternals. If it's Zuras, that would fit the ancient and powerful vibe and would also make him Thanos' cousin from the "good" side of the family, which would be kind of cool.

The problem with all of these is... none of them would need to send a merc to go pick him up.
Starfox. Calling it. His mother's description of the 'angel of light' or whatever; Quill's smooth-talker attitude; his connection to Thanos and the Avengers. It makes the most sense.

I'd love a Sentry movie, too. The additional problem that I hadn't thought of but that your post reminds me of is that even though he wants to be a protagonist, he often can't control his power and becomes a villain.

That's exactly what Scarlet Witch is, and she's going to be featured in Avengers 2.

Starfox would be a brilliant addition to the Marvel franchise. One small problem I have with it, however, is that Gamora and Quill end up as first cousins.

Which, of course, isn't a fatal problem, as Star Wars demonstrated.

Yeah, but it's not nearly as integral to her character as it is to The Sentry. Her evil phase would probably be glossed over by now if wasn't the foundation of the last 10 years of the Marvel continuity. Also I've heard that her powers are going to changed or at least scaled back for Avengers 2.

You couldn't adapt that first Sentry miniseries directly, it's not very cinematic and is too dependent on other Marvel characters. But I think a Sentry movie should adapt the basic concept of that miniseries.

For those who haven't read it, The Sentry is about
Spoiler!

Maybe Thanos never got around to filing the paperwork to legally adopt Gamora.

I was reading around and the two most popular theories are Starfox and Warlock. However, one that was mentioned kinda made sense, and that was Stardust. Peter's mom mentioned an angel of pure light and Stardust definitely is that. However, being a herald for Galactus, the rights are probably with the Fantastic 4 atrocity.

I might go see this again. It's very rare that I see movies in theaters more than once anymore.

(still annoyed that I didn't recognize Cosmo, especially after he growled at Rocket)

Another theory I've heard is that they introduce Angela for GotG2 (remember when everybody thought that's who Karen Gillan was playing?), and tie in all the 10th realm stuff.

Nah, Gamora's an adopted sort of stepdaughter, so no blood relation.
