My opinion on why is they hire coaches that make average players very good while we've managed to make good players ineffective and average.

Very few people leave Pitt and go on to have any real level of success anywhere else. I don't think that's because their ability to know when a player peaks is god-like. I think it's because great coaches are getting average talent to produce above their ability.

We see the same thing with the Pats. Few players leave NE and do much either...
