Always impressed with how traveled people on CP are. Anyone spent time in Istanbul?

Meant “well traveled” in the title…

Targeting next fall to visit Turkey for a few weeks and explore Istanbul. Surprised at the affordability of flights to get out there through Delta.

Any recommendations?

The thing about Midnight Express and the book he wrote was that at the time he portrayed himself as this innocent backpacker that just made a mistake smuggling hash. If you watch his locked up abroad episode he’d made several trips to Turkey smuggling hash and was a regular smuggler who finally got caught. He’s actually gone back and apologized for the way he portrayed the country in his story.

It's highly recommended to use a reputable guide when visiting places like Istanbul or Cairo. You can't just fly in and think it's like visiting a western city. You'll be screwed. Good guides for Americans are pricey, so take that into consideration

I flew in and flew out. Didn't get to spend any time there, but I have been to Turkey about 5 times for a couple weeks each time. I haven't been there for about 35 years though.

This is interesting...I feel like this is certainly true for Cairo but I am not sure Istanbul has quite scams in such volume. Having said that you still have to be aware of your surroundings and very aware of possible scams. Researching a quality guide is a great idea.

I'm partial to Lake Jacomo - no need to go out looking for a meal when you have the perfect buffet at home, in KC!! Missouri Town is a pretty little escapade too!

In all seriousness what's the goal just to go and experience some culture unlike our own? Is there another purpose to be there? If just random (or not) I think Istanbul sounds interesting, actually.

A massive dynamic city with lots to see and do that is pretty unique from my daily life. Beautiful area so much on the water. Lots of really good food.

Just looks like a fun adventure.

awesome well if this becomes a thing you'll have to share some photos - that's pretty exciting - I've only been to the Caribbean and Mexico, blah!
