Some chatter today about Mahomes drifting too far from the pocket

Thoughts?

This is from a write up on nfl.com recapping the game, anyone agree with it?

“They're not terrible, and they're big enough to move masses of defenders around. They're just not all that clean or in sync yet. There was some leakage when dropping to protect Patrick Mahomes on Friday, leading to him being flushed out of the pocket and resulting in an interception in the end zone“

Nope, on the play they are referring to, in my opinion, it looked like if he would have stepped up into the pocket, which there was, he had plenty of time to make a throw. Tackles had their men shoved to the outside, and Mahomes made it tougher on himself by drifting out to the right.

Here's the INT. I wish it started a little sooner. But you can see him almost immediately starting to drift. He didn't want to be in a phone booth and risk the tackles collapsing on him.

But he needs to learn to trust that the tackles can at least hold their ground and not get pushed into him imo. Brown and Niang must outweigh Fisher and Remmers by 100 lbs.

By the time he had to bail there was no choice. But if he doesn't drift initially he might have been able to step up into the clean pocket.

I have zero concerns Mahomes won't figure this out.

There is no room for him to step up there. Schwartz himself said that on twitter.

I'd like to see another angle of that miss to Hardman in the first quarter.

Seemed like he was open the whole way and Pat just missed him. thought that was his worst play of the night.

looked like he had a clear touchdown to Hardman. But, he ran out.

He knows he needs to work on this. Running for your life the majority of your time in the NFL doesn’t help. Probably see him stay more often as the trust of the OL improves.

I think theres still some trust issues. Part of it is rustiness. The bigger issue to me was that he looks uncomfortable in clean pockets. Feel like he was backfooting throws he didn't need to be.

Keep in mind he's not only overcoming the OL disaster in the super bowl, but also a few games where his shitty interior OL kept letting defenders get in to swat passes away.

It's tricky because you'd want him stepping up in the pocket and not running away from pressure, but he can do things outside the pocket that no other QB can do, so it's hard to tell him not to do that.

Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers are basically in a class that no one else can touch, so they both have plays where they hang on to the ball too long and wander around and get criticized for it. Especially when they make mistakes.

Haters gonna hate... They like to pick him apart because they aren't paid to say how great Mahomes is all the time. Patrick is gonna be Patrick and while he can work on some things, you can't take the wild out of a wild animal and you don't want to take away what makes him really special just because he throws an interception in preseason.

A lot of the criticisms come from ex-players that are so envious of his ability that they can't help it because they know how much better his is than they could ever be.

It's a great place to be; having people attempt to break down a small issue because they have nothing else.

Hate? Or maybe it's that even Michael Jordan and tiger woods had things in their game to work on. Thankfully, mahomes isn't satisfied with being any less than perfect. It's obviously not a game changing issue. But it will really help his progression.

Not to mention learning these habits now will prolong his career. He will always have some mobility but at some point he will need to rely more on quick decisions than using his escape abilities to throw off platform. Might as well learn it now.
