Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed

The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.

More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.

The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.

“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.

You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.

Entitled "Molten Swing"

Entitled "The Air up There"

Entitled "Ornithology"

Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"

"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.

"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.

"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.

"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one.

Thoughts?

When it fails? It is already delivered early and on budget.

Southwest just restored service to pre pandemic levels.

What exactly do you think is going to happen? Are people going to stop coming to and from Kansas City?

They will like they have always done cancel flights that aren't full and eventually cut back altogether. The airlines including Southwest have no interest in paying for KC's airport if they don't make money those flights will be cut off. No one is going to make a hub here is no reason. The city is trying again to get an international route but the airlines see what Iceland Air did. Briefly had traffic then petered out to nothing and it was shut down. The food and drinking establishments are already struggling with employees bailing and traffic waning. They may get a shot in the arm with the draft maybe not.

The number one air traffic to KCI is freight just the way it is. Sad for a city steeped in airline history but KC and city hall in a nutshell lost that along with the racetrack and all that went in around it.

ChiefsPlanet is amazing. "Our new airport is dead on arrival and it's probably because they put art in it."

This downward spiral you are speaking of is news my friends actually involved in the operation of the airport day to day. Food and beverage places anywhere always overhire early and cut back from there that is just how that business goes. Look, it is fine that you have hated this project from the start but no need to make things up.

You are literally HALF A BILLION dollars off.

Did you get harmed as a child in a new airport when you were young? What happened to make you feel so compelled to make things up out of thin air.

Kansas City have gotten more for the money they agreed upon to spend...

Quote:
The cost estimate for the terminal has varied greatly since the project was approved in 2017. Initially, the estimate sat around $964 million, and it fluctuated around from $1.3 billion to $1.6 billion before settling on its current budget of $1.5 billion.

Why the changes? In short, the terminal got bigger.

Pat Klein, director of the Kansas City Aviation Department, said that during the initial airport evaluation in 2016, called “Exhibit K,” the city recommended a $964 million airport terminal that would contain 35 gates.

Once voters approved the project in November 2017, the city reentered negotiations with airlines to finalize the project’s budget.

“In 2017, we started doing some of the design stuff, and the airlines said, ‘Here’s what we plan on flying in Kansas City,’” Klein said. “And when we looked at the numbers, they actually wanted to build a 39-gate facility.”

This increased the budget to $1.68 billion, he said, which the city and the airlines negotiated down to a maximum budget of $1.5 billion.

The larger size of the terminal will also allow the facility to be expanded in the future. There’s enough space for an additional three gates, two baggage claim devices and two security lanes, if an increase in airport traffic makes another upgrade necessary.

You just posted about the dishonesty of KC and City Hall. The voters voted for a 1 billion airport and you let the airlines con you into more. Like I said and have said you're not going to see Southwest or any other airline fulfill that promise. They are not paying for our airport as soon as it's not profitable those gates will be barren.

I think the art livens up an empty space. And that empty space includes the cavernous skulls of (not you) many posters in this thread .
I have no dog in this fight at all. Hope it works out not only for KC but for the airlines and travel in general. Why are there 50' high ceilings with cathedral glass and no 2nd floor in AN AIRPORT??? Is it going to be a practice facility for the NFL and college football teams when it gets slow? And it's not like there's ever been a tornado in Missouri.

I won't even begin with the overhead problems on climate control and construction costs that went and will go into that decision but do you think 99% of people buzzing through an airport to get on their next flight even care?

What KC does effects me about as much as billay's sex life so my interest lies more in the WTF led you to that decision as opposed to personal attachment.

I honestly with nothing but the best for the new KC airport.

I dunno, their art budget was apparently one third of one percent of the $1.5 billion, and if you're spending that much on an airport, why not make it look nice?

I imagine some people would be pissed if it looked just as dreary and outdated as the old airport with people bitching along the lines of "$1.5 billion and they couldn't even make it look nice?!?!"

I've been in a lot of airports and have walked by a lot of art and what not... I still remember Atlanta's glowing tunnels from when I was there ~15 years ago. It didn't change my life, but I assume didn't bankrupt Atlanta and probably makes people smile for a minute.

One thing that I will mention about art is that it can serve as a waypoint or meetup spot, which is important in a place like an airport. Plus, it's better for morale than wandering through some sort of East Germany concrete block structure built at the lowest bid. As human beings, we no longer dwell in the primeval forest, so we need to have some type of beauty in our environment.

I really enjoy walking through Denver's airport and deciphering the clues left behind by the alien lizard slave laborers.

It is funny getting involved in an art at the airport conversation with a person who lives in Denver. The art the stories and urban myths behind the art at DIA are absolutely wild.
