Will free agents come to KC on cheap contracts?

I've been thinking about this all morning--obviously a question that can't totally be answered until FA itself begins in March. But it came to mind because Tyrann Mathieu tweeted Sunday about how getting money was nice, but he just wants a ring now....

Which brings me to this. If you are a pending NFL FA, what other place looks like a safer bet to win right now and beyond than Kansas City? Considering Mahomes and his age, the age and level of talent on the offensive side of the ball, I would think its destination #1 by a fair margin. People love the culture there too, and players know that.

So, similar to things we've seen before with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, do you believe that we will sign some veterans for below market value? Any ideas on who it may be exactly? I know I am talking in hypotheticals here, but its an exciting thought that may get us over the hump so long as we have a new DC...

Discuss.

Not a chance as long as Sutton is here. He's made guys like Hitchens and Fuller look significantly worse than they did the season prior.

I don't see them coming to KC on "cheap" contracts but if it's a choice between a lower tier like Oakland, AZ or Buffalo offering 8-9 mil per year and KC offering 7-8 then I see some opting for KC. Money still talks. I think Sutton retiring or getting replaced would help as well. Being a part of a "31" defense isn't good for anyone's resume and without changes on the defensive side coaches you can't say with a straight face that it won't happen again.

No.

This is their job and their lifetime earning potential pretty well centers around a 5-6 year period that will comprise a tiny fraction of their adult lives.

The Chiefs may win a tie here or there or maybe get a slight discount, but the days of players taking a pittance to play with a 'winner' are gone - there is just way way WAY too much money in this league right now and there are going to be opportunities for them to get paid in a big way.

But DJ is right. I'm sure a ton of free agents will be interested in the Chiefs due to us having the MVP, but in the end money still talks and bullshit walks.

All depends on the player and their interests. I’m sure certain players would be willing to take a bit less if this is their preferred destination.

Trust me I never believed that players would take huge discounts to play here but I think if the money is close, KC is going to win most tiebreakers.

Also, there are those players every now and then that do care about winning so much so that their main priority is going where that seems most possible. Not terribly common but it happens.

Not as long as they keep throwing out ridiculous contracts to FAs...

Who would be stupid enough to come play for cheap when they can drive the price up on this front office.
