Certainly can't hurt.

And by all accounts, Ozuna is just a great dude in the clubhouse. You can find plenty of clips of him in the dugout. He and Martinez are going to be pretty damn funny to watch.

Here's hoping Carlos can convince him to extend by the AS break. Stranger things have happened.

From today's Goold article

the Cardinals have met with Baltimore to determine if they could meet the asking price for Manny Machado.

With Ozuna in tow, **** it - deal with the possibility of a rental and see if you can sell him on extending mid-season. That clubhouse is going to be a lot of fun with Ozuna, Martinez, Pham and Fowler; gotta think Machado would enjoy it.

articles out there saying he wants to play SS. Maybe slide Dejong to 3B and we got an "in" to keeping him long term.

Thry had to change the stale locker room.

Of course no way they are discussing this deal Unless they are willing to spend $300 million on resigning him. I'm all for it. As stated earlier, it's less <20% of the new cable tv contract money. He's worth it

There's no way the Cards are getting Manny too, They've never made two splash moves in one off season. Hell they normally don't make 2 per decade.

Gonna take a bigger deal than that to get what will be the 2nd most coveted FA behind Harper and a Boras client.

Strasburg is the only name that comes to mind that signed before hitting FA and his agent was Boras. And for a guy that wasn't giving you 150 innings and always injured for the playoffs getting $200M was a no brainer deal.

we just started a new $2 billion/15 years tv contract this coming year. If you are not going to spend that new money on Marchado, then who would you spend it on?

Machado isn't a Boras client; he's with Lozano.

Lozano's guys will extend and there are rumors that Machado will consider it as well.

And as you may recall, Lozano was Pujols agent and has had a solid relationship for a long time with the Cardinals. If anything blew the Cards out of the water it would be Matheny.

But there has to be some optimism that as part of Machado's move back to SS, he'd get to spend a lot of time with Jose Oquendo and perhaps we could sell him on the squad.

This one actually makes a lot of sense and isn't completely farfetched. And the Cardinals likely still have the bullets to get this done if they really wanted to. It's just a question of how badly they want to push their chips in and how confident they are they can stay in the game.

Again - just a sidenote that folks seem to forget and it's a HUGE one.

The Cardinals now own 30% of their regional cable network. So now they can spend money to make money. A splash move that puts eyes on the screen makes a lot of sense for them at this point.

I wouldn't take 10-1 odds that this actually gets done - you're right that it's a HUGE long-shot and a big time gamble that they have been wholly opposed to making since LaRussa left town and was able to hold their feet to the fire.

But it isn't quite as crazy or impossible as it seems at first blush.

Is that 30% of the entire network or just the Cardinals broadcasts? If it is the entire thing they would get a cut off the Royals, Blues, and Pacers broadcasts.

I've always assumed it was the 'smaller' regional chunk that also includes some Blues revenue. The Pacers and Royals broadcast on different channels though they have the same 'FSMW moniker'. Truth be told, I've never had a great answer either way.

In either event, they have a direct stake in keeping this team interesting now.

Getting Ozuna w/o having to lose Flaherty and Alcantara is a coup by Mozeliak. Obviously, some of the younger arms could color this deal, but it looks like Derek Jeter is the fish at the table that everyone is going to abuse until he runs out of chips, and the herpes-having mother****er deserves it.

He's losing Alcantara. I presume you meant Weaver or Reyes?

But yeah, if the lower level arms returns are palatable, I'll be damn glad we got to get to Jeter's carcass before it was picked clean.
