Gee, maybe it's because the players suck and all this talk about scheme is wasted breath?

Still not the same thing. Vanilla defense in preseason means they don't game plan, play most of the time in base defense, and they don't use any fancy coverages or blitz packages. Simplifying now would mean simplifying the terminology, maybe cutting down on the total number of defensive playcalls, and overall just making it easier for the players to understand. Simplifying does not mean going vanilla.

Right, they play majority straight up zone in preseason. No blitzing, man coverage, or complex stuff.

If you watch them play right now, they suck in zone.

You're asking for something that isn't going to fix anything.

Just realize that you said "the scheme is too complex and needs to be simplified" followed by "they don't scheme in the preseason".

The ONLY logical conclusion here is that the players, not the scheme, is the problem. Because even without any scheme at all, they still give up tons and tons of yards.

But admitting the players are the problem involves giving up hope for this year, since that can't be fixed, and everyone is too excited about Mahomes to want to believe that right now.

There's this weird misconception that just because a D doesn't scheme in preseason it's an excuse to get your ass kicked.

It's quite the opposite actually. It's proof that your D can't sustain without scheme, which is evidence of talent limitations.

If there's no scheme to mask deficiencies, then talent wins out. If there's no scheming then it's talent vs talent. If you're getting your ass handed to you, what does that say about your talent level? Pretty simple really.

The problem is simple but the fix isn't. That's the problem. Like Eleazar said, people want to believe there's a quick fix so they want to fire Sutton.

Maybe the next one will quit going into prevent early enough to turn dominating performances into needless nailbiters or outright losses.
