Chiefs claim the top DVOA ranking despite loss

We're on our way.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dv...6-dvoa-ratings

Quote:
In a statistical metric based on play-by-play analysis rather than wins and losses, sometimes a team will rate better for a close loss than another team rates for a close win. That's what happened this week in the Football Outsiders DVOA ratings, and it was enough to knock the undefeated Los Angeles Rams out of the top spot. Instead, the Kansas City Chiefs ascend to No. 1 despite losing their first game to New England on Sunday night.

There are two big differences between the Chiefs and the Rams this year. The first is schedule strength. Kansas City's past schedule now ranks seventh by average DVOA of opponent, while the Rams' schedule ranks 22nd.

Quote:
The second difference is special teams. Kansas City has had positive special teams value in five of six games, and the other game was -0.6%. Kansas City has more games with special teams DVOA over 25% than the entire rest of the league combined. The Chiefs are on pace to rank among the best special teams we've ever tracked.

If we could just get that defensive ranking into the upper teens.....it would be lights out, the party's over for everyone else.

On a side note, the Cincy defense isn't that good either. Makes me feel a little more at ease about Sunday night.

Top DVOA spot maintained.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dv...7-dvoa-ratings

Quote:
We have the same top two as we did a week ago: Kansas City at No. 1 and the Los Angeles Rams right behind them at No. 2. And with Chicago losing to New England and dropping to No. 6, we're back to having a huge gap at the top of the DVOA ratings, this time between the top two teams and everyone else
Quote:
On the positive side, you'll notice that Kansas City's big win over Cincinnati bumped the Chiefs back into the all-time offensive top ten. However, the Chiefs had their worst special teams of the year (-7.9% DVOA) in this game so their special teams narrowly dropped out of the all-time top ten.

The 2003 Chiefs were actually a bit better overall, and quite a bit better in forcing turnovers.

That being said, Cincinnati was a positive sign.

Susanna Hoffs' punter dude is damn impressive.

In a strangely ironical way, it's too bad that Colquitt never got a chance to compete against him in that game.

True, but, our defense is trending up and the back half is easier, so I’d be curious to compare after the full 16 games.

Interesting that special teams got a negative score. Only bad thing I remember was the missed FG from.50+ yards that got carried by the wind. We had a turnover forced. How was it a negative?

Butker had that weird kickoff the stopped at the edge but was counted out of bounds because the returner was standing out of bounds when he picked it up. That and the fact that we didn’t punt at all may be why? We were scoring too much to set up Colquitt, dammit!

They also had 2 penalties on special teams and Tyreek did nothing on punt returns. Robinson had a 0-yard punt return too.
