He's why the Dolphins lumped $50m annually on Tua. No matter what positives he brings to the team, that decision alone ensures the Dolphins will never be contenders. The owner will bin him in a few years time after he tires of Tua sucking in the cold and the playoffs.

That's a team that seems to enjoy being in Miami a little too much and a coach that damn sure isn't gonna do anything to mitigate that.

Interesting little marriage there.

Don't imagine we're gonna see anything different from them going forward. They'll be front-runners that look like world beaters when the weather is nice and the sun is shining. But as soon as the playoffs get here and teams are looking to punch them in the face and the game gets real real hard, they'll fold.

The 1 seed is always nice to have, but Miami NEEDS the 1 seed to ever make a Super Bowl as they are.

All the best AFC teams (minus Houston if they’re good) are cold winter markets.

They’re aren’t going on the road multiple times in the AFC playoffs and winning.

I obviously get this narrative and they clearly folded against us, but that was also a top-5 cold game in NFL history.

They came within a whisker of beating the Bills in Buffalo the prior year with Skylar Thompson at QB.

The bigger issue is that they just didn't play well against better teams and for the second consecutive season they couldn't figure out their own counterpunch to DC's counterpunches for their offense.

While I'm not a Tua guy, what else are they supposed to do?

Head coaches are like quarterbacks in a sense. If you put quarterbacks/head coaches in 3 separate categories (really it’s 4 because “Mahomes” and “Reid” are their own unicorn category) it goes something like this:

1. Dudes who can win you a SB

2. Dudes who totally suck

3. Dudes who will go 10-7 (or comparable) every year and never do shit in the playoffs but their GMs/Owners are too afraid of failure to ever aim higher than a first round playoff loss.

Mike McDaniel is the definition of category 3 and as much as I love the guy (he is from Hawaii after all), so is Tua.

When you took that mediocre QB with pick 5 you're kinda stuck.

If you move on there's a 5% chance you get something better and a 95% chance you are worse and everyone gets fired.

Generally, you are correct. However there is some history recently of teams cutting bait pretty quickly on highly drafted QBs (maybe not 5 high, but 1st/early 2nd) to try again. Kyler over Josh Rosen comes to mind.

As a coach and GM, you keep him so you can make money for a couple more years. If you want to win a title, you try to find the guy while your roster is still loaded.

What’s the saying “fortune favors the bold”? You could easily comp Tua to Alex Smith.
