Early 2021 Mock (3 rounds)

*Chiefs get a 2021 and 2021 3rd round comp pick for Bieniemy.

1. Dylan Moses, LB, Alabama- After using a 2nd in Gay last year, the Chiefs take Moses in the 1st to pair with him and turn a position that’s been a weakness for far too long into a strength.

2. Jaelan Phillips, EDGE, Miami- The Chiefs need to add another pass rusher with KPass and Okafor set to be going elsewhere in 2021. Phillips is a former #1 overall recruit that battled injuries at UCLA before transferring to Miami.

3. Tylan Wallace, WR, Oklahoma St.- Wallace is a replacement for Watkins that should compliment Hill and Hardman well with his YAC ability. Like Watkins, Wallace might not be as fast as Hill/Hardman, but he is still plenty fast enough and can make big plays especially after the catch.

3. Bubba Bolden, S, Miami- another transfer to Miami, Bolden is a top HS recruit from USC and like Phillips is having a great year for the Hurricanes. I love Dirty Dan, but he’s a liability at times and the Chiefs could use another young athletic safety that gives Spags another chess piece to work with.

I know some are going to say “where’s the IOL?”, but the truth is this isn’t a very good class and unless you are willing to take one in the 1st, chances are you will be reaching for one in rounds 2-3. The Chiefs have 2 4th’s, 2 5th’s, and a 6th to work with. If they have to take 2 to hedge their bets a little, so be it.

Not sure I like the idea of taking a Bama LB in the first.

Yeah, I don’t love Moses and his stock is falling.

I’d take a pass rusher in round one or an interior ol then see if Moses false to round 2.

I just feel like pass rusher at the back of the first round is a trap.

It's probably irrational.

I just clicked few a few years of NFL drafts and checked for DE's drafted 25-32:

LJ Collier
Montez Sweat
Tak McKinley
Taco Charlton
Emmanuel Ogbah
Datone Jones

No one really leaps out at me as being worth a first round pick, and some of those guys were pretty much busts on their rookie deal? Like I said, its probably irrational. Its just a vague thought I have that its the positional value rather than the talent value pushing them up into the first round, if they had the talent value of a first rounder they normally go top 10?

Sweat is a pretty good player but only fell into that range because of some health concerns (heart).

It's a tough spot to grab a difference maker at high-value positions, because those guys generally go earlier.

I think Jaelan Phillips is my favorite DE prospect and he's likely available at the end of the second because of health concerns. He has huge upside, though.

For these high value positions like DE, we have the same thought process I think, I would want to take a shot later on looking at upside (just to be clear, not taking a guy who just has stand out physical tools, like KPass...).

At least with Clark anchoring one end of the line, if you end up taking a guy who's a 3rd down pass rush specialist, I think you can live with that in Spags system as long as you don't pay a high price for that guy.

I am generally full of unpopular takes, but if the right talent is there this year I think I would be in favor of taking a difference making safety in the first, with the intention of playing a lot of 3 safety packages for 1 year then letting HB walk after next year.

I love HB, but I just don't think the Chiefs can afford to pay him if they are thinking dynasty.

Most of the guys you listed there ended up having injury issues.

If you could get a guy like Ogbah or Charlton that could actually stay healthy, that's a good pick.

this draft is almost certainly going to be an anomaly.

I'm an online homer, and I like this draft.

To stay competitive and we are going to have to keep investing on the defense through the draft. I'm more willing to kick the tires on a vet WR than any other position, especially since we have Tyreek and Hardman.

Our o-line situation isn't as bad as it looked.

Fisher continues to lock down the LT spot. Nick Allegretti is 24, and just getting some playing time. I think he nails down that LG spot. We get LDT back for next season, and have Niang in the pipeline (depth for a year).

The real question marks are Schwartz, one year left on his deal, but at this point I don't think we are extending him. And the Center position, where Reiter is a free agent, which is frankly our biggest need. The issue is that it's not always a center in the draft that's worthy of a 2nd round pick. If there is, I think we have to consider it.

Under Andy, the Chiefs have always gotten by cheap on the line. No reason that won't consider. Just wish he could run block better.

I like Moses. He seems like a more polished version of Gay Jr with the same athleticism (ran a 4.46 as a Freshman). I just question the value of the position.

When I think about our team, I think our key areas besides Patrick are:

OT
Offensive weapons
Pass rushers
DB’s

Those positions seem to be what move the needle and it was pretty clear against the Raiders in our one loss.

I don’t know too much about the draft, except the WR class is awesome again and there’s some good CB’s as well, but I’d really prefer to get one of those positions. If they’re not available I’m fine with Moses

Yeah and thats the type of guy you're gonna be getting at the end of the first.

You aren't finding your Khalil Macks that come in and are dominant immediately.

If you take a guy that ends up being say, Ogbah level, thats fine.
