New Feature: Up/Down Voting Posts

We have been playing around with up/down vote functionality for the past couple of weeks and just activated it in the Lounge prior to this thread.

1. Everyone can vote a post up or down. The vote totals themselves show up on the bottom right of the post. You can't vote on your own posts (the up/down vote is hidden), but you will see the totals once it's voted on.
2. If a post meets some criteria for being "good," the post will be given a yellow border (so that others are drawn to the "good posts" in a big thread).
3. Similarly, if a post meets some criteria for a "bad post," it will be shaded. If a post meets criteria for a "terrible post," it will be shown collapsed with a red bar. The red bar of a collapsed post shows the user's name, and you can click a button at the right to show the post.
4. This functionality doesn't mess with the order of posts.

I'm using "some criteria" only because we're sure it'll change. The border, shading, and collapsed posts are based on the difference between up and down votes, not a total number of one or the other. We'll be making adjustments based on usage, especially with collapsed posts.

We have questions about whether it'll work here vs a place like reddit. A few of us like the idea while others have brought up legitimate concerns. In the end, we decided to roll it out, at least temporarily.

This is a trial run.

We'll give it a week or two depending on how things go, then we'll put it to a vote as long as it's not an obviously terrible idea. The goal is make threads a little easier to scroll through -- easier to find the best contributions and easier to scroll past the trolling and derailments. We aren't out to completely hide posts and will adjust as needed to keep that percentage really low, or based on your feedback.

This would be a nice feature if it worked like Slashdot's system. Over there, you can filter a thread to only show you posts that are rated at whatever level you specify. Then you don't even see the trollish stuff at all.

Greying them out is fine I guess, but you still see them. And you could just as easily see how things are rated by looking at the thumbs up and thumbs down instead of color coding of posts. Seems kind of half-baked.

this seems like a pretty cool feature.

I'd love to have a way to go scorched earth Ignore when ignoring people. like, they don't even exist at any level once they're ignored.

that way, when an idiot who has had an account for 6 years and 100 posts shows up out the blue and starts ruining everything, they can be nuked from orbit. Though, that person is probably just a mult.

Many BBs have that sort of 'alert' functionality, it's nice.

While we are complaining, can we make the text entry box on the Reply to Topic pages bigger? It's probably the same size it was when everyone was using CRT monitors and there is a huge amount of available space on the page. It would be nice if it were much larger to make editing longer posts and articles easier.

If you guys want to see by "clunky," here's a page that will list all of the "votes" you have received. Don't say I didn't warn you about how bad it is.

The feature would be fine if it was driven by the individual user. Then it would be choice. Having it driven by group approval makes it censorship, and that's the opposite of what this place is supposed to be about.

If people have a problem with posters, they can use ignore (although Daface's greasemonkey script for a better ignore seems to be no longer available, much to my chagrin), and we understand that as an individual decision. If this was just an extension of that to individual posts, that would be something that might be worth testing. That's not what's happening here, though, and this system should never have gotten the ok even for testing.

I don't see the option on my posts. Everyone else's, not my own. So I don't know if mine are up or down.
