Mock (8/30)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 12-4, win the AFC West, and secure a 1st round bye. They host the Steelers again and manage to fend them off for a trip to the AFCCG, where they lose badly to New England. HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach stay on. QB Alex Smith is retained.

2. OLB Tamba Hali and ILB Derrick Johnson retire.

3. The Chiefs extend CB Terrance Mitchell 3 years, $18m ($7m guaranteed).

4. The Chiefs cut OG Jah Reid.

5. The Chiefs sign WR/KR De'Anthony Thomas for 2 years, $5m, OG/C Zach Fulton for 2 years, $5m, K Cairo Santos for 4 years, $11m ($4m guaranteed).

6. The Chiefs tender NT Rakeem Nunez-Roches, ILB Ramik Wilson, ILB Terrance Smith.

7. The Chiefs sign QB Tyler Bray, FB Anthony Sherman, WR Albert Wilson, TE Gavin Escobar, DE Jarvis Jenkins, DE David King, ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis to minimal deals.

8. The Chiefs let walk RB C.J. Spiller, WR Seantavius Jones, G Mike Person, NT Bennie Logan, NT Roy Miller, CB Phillip Gaines, P Dustin Colquitt.

9. The Chiefs are picking 29th, and have no compensatory picks.

The draft:

2. OLB Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech -- Physically ideal, prolific sack artist.

3. WR D.J. Chark, LSU -- Combines two of my favorite things in a receiver: insane quickness and a large catching radius.

4. OT Zachary Crabtree, Oklahoma State -- Isn't ready to go now but has the athleticism you need at the position.

5. CB Alijah Holder, Stanford
6. NT De'Asian Richardson, Louisville
7 (Marcus Cooper). RB Ito Smith, Southern Mississippi
7. P Will Gleeson, Ole Miss

roster:

QB: Smith, Mahomes, Bray
RB: Hunt, Ware, West, Smith

Smith is under contract next year but he's not a lock to even make the 53. He'll be on the PS at best.

The Chiefs don't currently have a 5th rounder due to the Erving trade.

I'm not sure I'm in favor of B12 OL. I don't know about the kid but there haven't been many that are any good that I know of.
