Clearly you didn't understand my post.

I said Chris Jones is already a top defensive player. Whther you pay him now or next year you'll have to pay him big dollars.

Kendall Fuller had a merely good season last year. If you pay him now, you might save quite a bit compared to if you let him play one more year and he has a stellar season as he has the potential to be great.

This makes no sense. Why would you not take this same logic to Chris Jones? He will cost significantly more this time next year if/when he has another great year.

Paying players for what “they might become” is very risky and not efficient, especially ones who have not shown elite characteristics for your team.

It's the only way you're gonna get value. It's risky paying guys before they break out because, well, they may not break out. But that's what these GM's are paid for. Figure it out and pay who's on the verge of being a star before they're a star.

You can use the same logic with Jones, but he doesn't want to just get paid a little right, now, he wants the max. I don't really know that he'll cost significantly more next offseason even with a great year if he already wants Donald money. They can't make him sign.

Yeah, I don't get the whole paying Fuller now in case he has a great season. Well, what if he doesn't? Then you're stuck paying a guy an elite level contract when maybe he never becomes elite. I thought you all were the show me state. Show me first, then get paid.

The logic is Chris Jones likely just saw his high water sack mark...the Chiefs may feel more comfortable paying him if he shows he is a complete player but if he goes from 16 sacks to say 11 he actually loses some value in negotiations.

You wouldn't theoretically pay Fuller an elite contract now. You'd pay him at a discounted rate, but guarantee he gets a nice payday that you'd hope he'd sign. Then he could outperform the contract.

If you wait until they show you (like Jones) then at best you get a guy that's just going to play to that contract. You aren't getting any surplus from it.

And to be real, we can't keep everyone, the smart play with Jones may to be play out this year, tag him, walk.

Maybe tag and trade depending on how the young DL performs.

Possibly, although keeping him with the idea of trading him will be hard if we have cap issues cause that number will be big.

But with what Jones has been, getting 5 years out of him and walking away isn't the worst idea, he doesn't strike me as a guy that is going to be super motivated after he gets paid.

Roll over the 25 mil from this year and it wouldn't be a problem.

At worst you tag him next year, then tag and trade the year after.

I don’t think players want to take discount deals. Look at Chris Harris Jr. he did that for Horseface and now he’s paying for it. He’s only getting paid 1 year of elite money (this year).

He lost so much money taking one for the team and now he’s pissed.

You get it! Some others seem not to understand.

You pay Fuller now, you have a chance to see him outperform his contract in the future.

Paying Chris Jones now or next year doesn't make a big difference with regard to how much you're going to pay him.

Even he he has a great year next year, his value will be rather similar. In other words, he has already broken out and there is no reason to think he won't sustain a good level of play (unlike Dee Ford for example).

That's not to say that Veach shouldn't pay Jones now BTW.

It's not a discount deal.

It's a deal in line with his value right now. He wasn't elite last year. He cannot ask for elite money now.

If he has a stellar year next year, which is a possibility, then his value can skyrocket.

Of course if you pay him now in accordance with his value now and he is elite the next 3 years or so, you'll have to give him a raise but it will still have been good business (meaning a few years of Fuller outplaying his contract).

If Fuller takes a lesser contract, it still might be an albatross.

The middle of the pack corner salary (I.e. 11th-14th highest) averages a $12 million cap hit. Is Fuller worth that? I sure as hell don’t think so.

It’s fine if he improves, but what if he doesn’t? That’s how GM’s get fired.
