Let's talk about the 49ers (Super Bowl Edition)

Well Chiefs vs Packers is what I had hoped for, but that's not happening.

Let's talk about Chiefs vs 49ers here.

You 49ers fans are really trying to convince yourselves that you're not scared of Pat, when in reality you saw a glimpse of what he can do to you guys last year (i think it was 31-10 at one point).

You can BANK on Mahomes drawing Ford offsides in this game and getting free plays. You better hope it doesn't cost you the Super Bowl like it did us last year.

LOL...you may be right. The 49ers' defense is vulnerable to a power running game. Their defense is extremely fast sideline to sideline and they swarm to the ball. However, their best defensive anchor on the d-line (Jones) is out for the season. The remaining players are tough, but they are tall and light and are prone to be pushed back by a physical line, particularly as the game wears on. But, I'm not sure KC has the tools to take advantage of this vulnerability.

40 speed isn’t what matters in eluding pas rushers in the pocket; short-area quickness (20-yard and shuttle) is.

Mahomes is basically identical to Wilson in that regard. They are both elite for NFL players, period,

Well, they better be. Because in 9 quarters of play Pat Mahomes put 94 points on the Patriots secondary.

So the Niners secondary should be much better than the Patriots secondary if they want to win.
Not sure if they are / will be better. What is better is the pass rush, by a long measure. But, if KC can give Mahomes time, he will pick apart the secondary. As a group, they are the weakest link on the defense. They just replaced Witherspoon, for example, when he gave up a long TD against Minn. Sherman, Willams and Ward are very solid in pass coverage. Mosely and Tartt are decent -> good. Will that be enough? I don't know.

I agree on the 40 yard point...that said, speed is what allows QBs to prolong plays to allow receivers to get open. 49ers sacked wilson 5 times in their first meeting...to my point that the 49ers linemen have very good short yardage quickness. But, if they couldn't get him within 5-10 yards, he'ld just scramble until a receiver came open. Don't know if Mahomes will be able to do that the same way Jackson, Murray and Wilson could.

Right, and I look at a guy like Rodgers who was incredibly good at escaping pressure in the pocket in a way similar to Mahomes at one time — and Patrick’s SS and 3C are much, much better than Rodgers’.

Mahomes is an extraordinary QB and you are lucky to have him. I also think he is great even from an opposing teams fan viewpoint. But Wilson is faster and more elusive than Mahomes. Lamar Jackson is track team fast. Just out of this world for QB fast. That's not to say Mahomes is not great. He is. Just not as mobile as Wilson or certainly not Lamar Jackson. He does other things as well or better than them though.

Any 49er fan who does not fear Mahomes is fooling themselves. No lead is safe with Mahomes leading KC. That said, I don't think last year's game is a good indication of anything. In another post, I listed the change over in the 49ers' defense since last year. It is a complete overhaul with pro bowlers substituting for practice squad caliber players across the board.

At the same time, Mahomes has a lot more experience too. He's not the same player either. It should be a great game. Really looking forward to it.

I think the hit on Jimmy last meeting was the only "tackle" any of our defenders made all year..

Of course, but I don't think you've seen such a dominant line across the board -- at least against the pass. They're all 1st rounders. You all know Ford's strengths and weaknesses. But Buckner's perhaps the best on that line. Armstead is having a crazy good contract year. Bosa is Bosa. I think it is one of those situations where the whole is more valuable than the sum of its parts. They are all so good at getting to the QB that when they are all playing, teams have a hard time stopping them all. You can't double team each player, and those that get one on one blocking are consistently beating their man. It really is pretty special, only enabled because SF sucked for so long and spent draft choices on d-linemen.

But....I will say that they tend to tire toward the end of games, which is when Mahomes is his most dangerous.

You can scheme around a pass rush if it's causing problems - especially if it's one player doing most of the damage. However, you can't scheme away Mahomes and all that he can do. The Niners have the much more difficult task on defense.
