That's a possibility. Hard to tell from the All-22, but I don't see anything that would prove he lost the ball. (After all, do we really know what a catch is even now?)

One of the problems is that damn dumbass CBS crew. Their camera team is pretty spotty. And I mean that. Their cameradudes have spots.
