Connor Embree - 1st Year WR Coach

Kid better button shit up.

Quote:
Connor Embree returns for his fifth season with the Chiefs and enters the 2023 season as the team's wide receivers coach after spending two seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2021-22) and two seasons as a defensive assistant (2019-20).

Embree again worked closely with the wide receiver corps in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach assisting an offense that led the league in receiving yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) passing first downs (272), receptions of 25+ yards (49) and points per game (29.2). Embree helped develop a new group of veteran receivers (JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson) who accounted for over 20 percent of the Chiefs receiving touchdowns. Smith-Schuster led the team's wide receiver group with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three trips to the endzone. Fifth-year receiver Valdes-Scantling had two regular season touchdowns and a career-high two postseason touchdowns. He stepped up big as the team battled through injuries in the AFC Championship Game, with 116 yards receiving off six receptions, three catches of 25+ yards and one touchdown en route to the team's Super Bowl LVII win.

In 2021, Embree worked primarily with the wide receivers group. WR Tyreek Hill recorded a career high 111 receptions for 1,239 yards en route to his sixth Pro Bowl nomination. WR Mecole Hardman ranked third on the team, recording career highs in catches (59) and yards (693).

In 2020, Embree primarily worked with the defensive backs who featured AP All-Pro S Tyrann Mathieu who led all safeties in the NFL with six interceptions and rookie CB L'Jarius Sneed who showed a lot of potential in the nine games he saw action (six starts). He snagged three interceptions, 2.0 sacks (-19.0 yards) and seven passes defensed.

In his first season with the Chiefs (2019), Embree primarily worked with a linebacking group that accounted for 5.5 sacks and 275 tackles in his role as a defensive assistant. LB Anthony Hitchens led the team in tackles with 88 and was responsible for 2.0 of the unit's 5.5 sacks.

Before jumping to the professional ranks, he spent two seasons on Coach David Beaty's staff at the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant where he gained experience working with the offense and special teams.

He also spent time in the high school ranks as the offensive coordinator at Blue Valley West High School and as the wide receivers coach at Fairview High School.

Embree played wide receiver for the Kansas Jayhawks (2011-13). He also spent one season at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2010).

Education: University of Kansas (B.S. 2013). Born: Superior, Colorado. Family:Wife - Alex.

College Career as WR
Quote:
2012 (So.): Did not see any game action. KU Record:1–11 (0–9 Big 12)

2011 (RS): Sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules after joining KU from UNLV.

2010 (Fr. at UNLV): Spent the 2010 season at UNLV, but took a redshirt. UNLV Record: 2–11 (2–6 MW)

High School: Was a quarterback as a senior in high school… Played free safety and recorded three interceptions as a junior… Earned second-team all-Eastern Kansas League honors… Was a three-year letterwinner… Also played basketball.

Personal: Born in Superior, Colo… Son of Natalyn and Jon Embree… Has one brother and one sister… Father served as the head coach at Colorado (2011-12), and has made assistant coaching stops at Colorado and UCLA in college football and the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins in the NFL… Brother, Taylor, played football at UCLA… Plans to major in communications… Would like to be a football coach… Main hobby is playing video games.

"They [Veach/Reid] believe they have been sloppy the last couple weeks with the WR's..."

I doubt this ever happens, but the good ol' boys club and nepotism under Reid have to stop. Quit hiring your buddies and bring in some qualified outside voices. Reid's message and his offense have gotten a bit stale. They need to shake things up. We keep hearing every year now how defenses have adjusted to what KC does. Well, how about starting the year fresh with something totally different?

Not sure of what the answer is specifically but they had better move heaven and earth to address this offensive disaster in the offseason.
WR's who can CATCH fixes most of it. The rest they can live with.

After reading his bio, the guy is educated. He received a B.S. from the University of Kansas (2013). That has to be worth something in his future endeavors.

On a side note his wife's name is Alex.

So the question remains… are these guys actually coachable?

Rodgers and lafleur had to ask Mvs to practice better. Now we have several weeks of the dude casually shrugging off his shit play and complaining about flights to Europe.

Instead of Toney taking accountability for his mistakes (Reid, mahomes have walked back their complaints) he’s still chirping at the refs. This after an offseason of trolling giants fans without good reason.

Does anyone think skyy has any football iq? I just don’t think the dudes all that bright on the field. This is a dude who folded like a lawn chair when he made mistakes last year.

We’ve talked a lot about these guys not being great players. Have we ever considered that they also don’t have the right attitudes? Ranging from soft skyy to casual Mvs to stubborn Toney .

It's not Reid's style to throw someone under the bus like that mid-season. I'd be shocked if this guy has any real duties right now other than "go make copies", and also would be surprised if he's still with the team next year.

All this may be true, but they are all also playing their worst football this year. They're bad, but now they are rhe worst versions of that bad.

Remember Toney's debut against the 49ers last year? The glove adjust catch? I'm not saying he was Jerry Rice out there, but that was an actual route where he actually faced one on one versus a corner, and then tracked the ball far downfield.

This year we're treating him like a gimpier version of DAT. Only less valuable to the offense. And I don't think I've seen him run anything like that.

So what gives? Why can't he occasionally run a goddamn normal route like a normal goddamn WR?

I don't believe them to be THIS bad. With Mahomes and Reid they should be at least average. All their flaws are magnified by the fact that it doesn't look like they're taught the schemes and gameplan well during the week. This isn't a case of one player regressing while others stayed the same. Or even two players. This is basically the whole room regressing. And Rice's usage isn't all that encouraging from a coaching perspective. They're just now getting him to 80% snaps and running more varied routes (as of the last game). He should have been doing this shit when it was clear he was by far and away the best WR at like week 5 or something. So either they didn't develop him fast enough, which is a coaching issue, or they did but didn't put him out on the field, which is also a coaching issue.

The only question is whether this was a perfect storm of bullshit and this same coaching staff (minus Connor, I have zero hope in him) can get their shit back together and be good.

yeah, last year they fit a scheme that got them open. And they could play off of kelce who was still a juggernaut. And they could play off mahomes who is a miracle worker at extending plays.

This year they have to do the actual work themselves. None of these guys have ever in their career been consistent threats and now we need them to be more than just an occasional weapon. We can’t hide them like we did last year. More reps and targets means more visibility to mistakes, and more visibility means more pressure to perform.

there’s an additional layer that these guys just aren’t good at dealing with adversity. Remember skyy curling up after every mistake last year? Look at Mvs’ comments the past few weeks. And how toney trolling giants fans and refs all year. These are mistakes that roll up to Andy. And Andy is so damn good at managing players attitudes that if he can’t shape it, it’s on the players not the coaching.

Ultimately I think next year we get embree some veteran coach to help. And that cleans up some stuff. But at some point we have to consider that there’s only so much coaches can do when the players aren’t very capable no matter who coaches them.
