Connor Embree - 1st Year WR Coach

Kid better button shit up.

Quote:
Connor Embree returns for his fifth season with the Chiefs and enters the 2023 season as the team's wide receivers coach after spending two seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2021-22) and two seasons as a defensive assistant (2019-20).

Embree again worked closely with the wide receiver corps in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach assisting an offense that led the league in receiving yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) passing first downs (272), receptions of 25+ yards (49) and points per game (29.2). Embree helped develop a new group of veteran receivers (JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson) who accounted for over 20 percent of the Chiefs receiving touchdowns. Smith-Schuster led the team's wide receiver group with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three trips to the endzone. Fifth-year receiver Valdes-Scantling had two regular season touchdowns and a career-high two postseason touchdowns. He stepped up big as the team battled through injuries in the AFC Championship Game, with 116 yards receiving off six receptions, three catches of 25+ yards and one touchdown en route to the team's Super Bowl LVII win.

In 2021, Embree worked primarily with the wide receivers group. WR Tyreek Hill recorded a career high 111 receptions for 1,239 yards en route to his sixth Pro Bowl nomination. WR Mecole Hardman ranked third on the team, recording career highs in catches (59) and yards (693).

In 2020, Embree primarily worked with the defensive backs who featured AP All-Pro S Tyrann Mathieu who led all safeties in the NFL with six interceptions and rookie CB L'Jarius Sneed who showed a lot of potential in the nine games he saw action (six starts). He snagged three interceptions, 2.0 sacks (-19.0 yards) and seven passes defensed.

In his first season with the Chiefs (2019), Embree primarily worked with a linebacking group that accounted for 5.5 sacks and 275 tackles in his role as a defensive assistant. LB Anthony Hitchens led the team in tackles with 88 and was responsible for 2.0 of the unit's 5.5 sacks.

Before jumping to the professional ranks, he spent two seasons on Coach David Beaty's staff at the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant where he gained experience working with the offense and special teams.

He also spent time in the high school ranks as the offensive coordinator at Blue Valley West High School and as the wide receivers coach at Fairview High School.

Embree played wide receiver for the Kansas Jayhawks (2011-13). He also spent one season at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2010).

Education: University of Kansas (B.S. 2013). Born: Superior, Colorado. Family:Wife - Alex.

College Career as WR
Quote:
2012 (So.): Did not see any game action. KU Record:1–11 (0–9 Big 12)

2011 (RS): Sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules after joining KU from UNLV.

2010 (Fr. at UNLV): Spent the 2010 season at UNLV, but took a redshirt. UNLV Record: 2–11 (2–6 MW)

High School: Was a quarterback as a senior in high school… Played free safety and recorded three interceptions as a junior… Earned second-team all-Eastern Kansas League honors… Was a three-year letterwinner… Also played basketball.

Personal: Born in Superior, Colo… Son of Natalyn and Jon Embree… Has one brother and one sister… Father served as the head coach at Colorado (2011-12), and has made assistant coaching stops at Colorado and UCLA in college football and the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins in the NFL… Brother, Taylor, played football at UCLA… Plans to major in communications… Would like to be a football coach… Main hobby is playing video games.

"They [Veach/Reid] believe they have been sloppy the last couple weeks with the WR's..."

I think these guys regressed to the mean. Mvs and Watson are who they were when they played for hall of fame QBs in Green Bay and Tampa.

It’s not like any of these guys were consistently good. We kinda caught lightning in a bottle in that we had a scheme defenses weren’t prepared for. When you actually look at our WRs last year it’s the same maddening inconsistency where they disappear for long long stretches and mvs/watson had the same route cross ups last year as they did this year. We kinda hit lightning in a bottle where these boom/bust WRs disappeared but showed up at all the right moments. Toney and Mvs on the whole were ineffective but man they put together a few huge huge games that make you forget all the ones where they were invisible.

Guys lining up wrong, not running routes properly is on the coach. You can have zero talent and still do those things properly.

Here’s the other thing… does anyone think with how bad our WRs are playing that Nagy and bleymaier aren’t heavily involved, especially knowing embrees inexperience? I think our WRs are just idiots. We need some shakeups on our staff but the main reason these guys aren’t good is because they just aren’t good.

If Toney needs the WR coach's help to line up correctly, Toney is maybe the dumbest mother ****er in the history of the NFL, and that's saying something. The asshole has singlehandedly (no pun intended) caused two losses this season.

I really don't particularly care how much Embree is or isn't to blame, but this coaching staff needs an enema in the offseason. Embree and Bleymaier should both be gone. Not sure about Nagy, if he stays he needs to be on the hotseat.

I doubt this ever happens, but the good ol' boys club and nepotism under Reid have to stop. Quit hiring your buddies and bring in some qualified outside voices. Reid's message and his offense have gotten a bit stale. They need to shake things up. We keep hearing every year now how defenses have adjusted to what KC does. Well, how about starting the year fresh with something totally different?

Not sure of what the answer is specifically but they had better move heaven and earth to address this offensive disaster in the offseason.

We’re one year removed from a scheme that brilliantly exploited defensive tendencies. Scheme was a huge reason for success last year. We just chose to triple down on it while defenses tripled down on stopping it. We should have been more proactive about evolving but let’s not forget we’re less than a year removed from that. The messaging isn’t stale. We just made a miscalc for a year and then we’re easily back on track
