Peyton “looked real good” throwing to new Broncos teammates
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 26, 2012, 3:53 PM EDT As he settles in with the Broncos, Peyton Manning is learning the rules of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, including that he can work out with teammates, but only away from the team’s facilities and outside the watchful eyes of the coaches. And that’s exactly what Manning did today. Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post reports that Manning took snaps from center J.D. Walton and threw passes to wide receiver Eric Decker and tight end Julius Thomas during a session at a Denver-area high school, and afterward Decker said he liked what he saw. “He looked real good, though he probably won’t admit that he’s feeling good or feeling back to the way he wants to be,” Decker said. Decker said Manning is trying to get comfortable with his new teammates now, and that the players who were on the roster last year are talking to him about the offensive concepts the Broncos employed — even though the offense will be quite a bit different with Manning running it in 2012. “Just some drill work, talking through stuff, so he gets familiar with the verbage and the calls,” Decker said. “The biggest thing is he wanted to get a feel for us, and a feel for being under center.” The Denver Post published 23 photos from today’s session. To the extent that you can tell anything from a still photo of a guy throwing a pass in sweats and a T-shirt, Manning looks pretty much like he has always looked. -------------------------------------------- He looks pretty thin to me...not that I've looked at any comparison pictures. |

I'm personally quite satisfied with the risk to reward ratio here. Also, as much as I like Tebow, he's even more of a gamble than an injured Peyton Manning - don't you think? Would you want to completely revamp your offense, and build your franchise around Tebow, even if you believe that he's incredibly talented? The investment in Peyton Manning means that when Peyton Manning goes down, the franchise chases another traditional quarterback - not easy, but much easier than finding a Tebow replacement if that experiment goes south. And at the end of the day, that's what Tebow is - an experiment. I love Tim Tebow, but I'd rather watch and root for that experiment from the outside looking in. It's certainly better for my blood pressure. |

I'd be happy to have Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker back when Elway was quarterback. I think Thomas has more natural talent than Rod Smith - and quite frankly, I think Eric Decker is a lot more athletic than Eddie McCaffrey was (Decker's hands aren't as sure as Eddie's were, but then again, Eddie didn't have Tebow's funny "spiral" coming at him, so who knows).

now Peyton Manning = Chad Pennington with a better football brain.
Dude, that Denver O-line had better protect him well because he's going to break in half when he gets hit. |

My guess is that they've seen him throw quite a bit and they're more than happy with what they have seen and convinced his current condition is not a negative. If you heard Manning talk, he mentioned over and over again about getting back into the gym and working with the trainers. Physically, he may not be where he wants to be and he may not look like he used to ... it's March.
Let's see how he looks when training camps get here and they're going into the preseason in July/August. I think he'll look more like everyone expects him to look. It sounds like he's passing the ball fine and with the zip and accuracy that he's always shown and that's what matters at this point. |

You can't judge anything by still photos. I'd rather see video of him throwing...
