That's exactly how I envision the failure occurring. I think a leak started at that flange joint and you have all that pressure coming in that totally blew the end cap off the rest of the vessel. The rest of the carbon fiber hull probably immediately shattered into a thousand tiny pieces leaving both titanium end caps floating to the bottom.

maybe it was more of a weight /logistics issue the Trieste was buld 70 years ago from steel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trieste_(bathyscaphe) but maybe they were trying to have it weigh less to be able to logistically move it around easier. i d k thats what I thought when I read about the trieste going WAY deeper than the Titan 70 years go with basic metals |

Anyone wanna take bets on how long it takes for this to become a film starring Mark Whalberg?

If they would have been rescued alive, filming would be starting in the next couple of weeks. Since they went splat, we'll just have to suffer at least three documentaries on the tragedy.

If they had survived and made a movie Tom Hanks would put out hits on any actor that challenges him for lead Hero.

This was a good read. The sphere at the bottom was the only pressurized part of the ship. 35,797 ft deep? Holy shitballs. |

The construction video of this sub is a horror and I kind of want to vomit seeing it. What kind of reckless asshole was this?
