Space Exploration megathread

Since a number of cool things are happening in space exploration these days, we'll widen the scope of this thread a smidge. Conversation about all things space exploration are welcome, whether it be from NASA, SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, or anyone else. Chances are most of the discussion will still be about SpaceX since they love to make things public and fun, but nothing's off limits. I'll eventually get around to modifying the OP to include resources for other companies too, but in the meantime, feel free to post any cool stuff you run across.

Apparently they're naming their drone ships after Iain M. Banks' Culture series. I kind of hope they name the next one (if there is a next one) "So Much For Subtlety".

Or, "I wouldn't like to be a character in one of my books" - that might work...

Blew up. ****.

Not a good year for ISS resupply missions. Hope this doesn't set SpaceX back too much.

That is disappointing to say the least. I know these things will happen and all but, as DaFace noted, it has not been a good year in the industry.

Makes one wonder if perhaps the accidents aren't all accidental.

We're talking about a competitive public industry with billions in future revenue on the line. So it would not surprise me if some of the events this year were the result of industrial sabotage. Emphasis of course on 'some'. There are always going to be accidents.

Boeing pissed Elon is eating from its honey pot?

It is possible I suppose. Especially when you consider that up until this point, "cheaper" hasn't really been much of a target.

I'd hate losing free money too.

It doesn't take much to go from 'controlled explosion' to 'explosion'.
Hope they get back up soon.
