WTF, Amazon?!?!

So I logged into my Amazon account this evening to order some razor blades and noticed that in my product browsing history is the Ravens/Cowboys game.

Why is that odd?

Because I didn't watch it on Amazon Prime. I didn't watch it via any streaming service. I didn't watch it on a smart TV, I didn't even watch it on a connected device.

I watched it OTA on a regular TV. I know those stupid smart home devices can hear you when you say their name and I'm sure they listen to my conversations on occasion but are they listening to what I'm ****ing watching on TV?

Amazon now streams NFL games on their website. If you stayed logged into Amazon it might show up as watching the stream.

Well, is the TV a smart TV? Did you have the TV paired to your cell phone or anything?

Basically, I was looking around at Roombas and just seeing the pros and cons, and now every damn ad that I come across everywhere is now showing Roombas.

Smart TVs are pretty bad when it comes to privacy. ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) tries to determine what program you are watching and sends that data back to the manufacturer and third party companies. Coupling this with your IP, WiFi SSID, and other data can allow them to target ads to you on other platforms (web, mobile, etc). Luckily, some of the manufacturers are beginning to face class action lawsuits, so at most are now starting to offer ways to disable the tracking to an extent.
