Nate Taylor: Chiefs plan to extend Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith before season begins

Quote:
Throughout the next month — before the season opener Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens — the Chiefs will attempt to sign Humphrey and Smith to lucrative contract extensions, a feat that Veach has yet to achieve this time of the year in the previous six seasons during his tenure.

“Your hope is that everybody gets paid,” Mahomes said. “I tell Veach all the time: ‘You draft too well.’ It’s a good problem to have. I’m excited for those guys and it all gets handled in the right way. The hope is to keep this core together. I’ll have that flexibility in my contract to help get them some money as much as possible.”

Along with Humphrey and Smith, the Chiefs also want to sign linebacker Nick Bolton (entering the last year of his rookie contract) and kicker Harrison Butker (entering the final year of his contract) to multiyear extensions.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself and marvel at the Front Office & ownership. (How nice is it to know that Peterson/Pioli/et al. are distant memories that can't hurt us anymore?)

If he's thinking long term, he knows can easily make up that roughly 3 million difference in local business sponsorships, speaking engagements and the like... hell open a BBQ joint to compliment the 1587 Steakhouse and he can clean up in KC

You also get your money a year earlier, as opposed to waiting until next offseason and hoping you're healthy with no dip in play.

See, thats exactly how I would be approaching these decisions as a player

Another 2-3 years and 2-3rings, or a huge roll of the dice... hmmm

We can definitely pay Smith... just know that Thuney will roll off. But, Thuney isn't going to last forever anyway... much rather plan on replacing one guard, and not two.

I think it was ESPN that ranked top 10 interior lineman, and they had Smith JUST outside the top 10, and the most likely to make a huge jump by next year.

We have 2 second round picks next year, correct? We can spend one of those on Thuneys replacement. Should be a top guard in the draft picking in the 2nd round.

If Trey stays I’d bet money that Nourzad is the starting LG

No - we'll have 2 thirds.

The Sneed deal got us a 2025 third from Tennessee.

Still feel like that return was a massive dick punch. How do we not even get a 2024 third for the guy? Ugh.

That would be great if Nourzad really got the technique down and learned this year. Even if he doesn't completely blossom, he could be a very valuable inside swing backup for the OLine.

Still have Hanson as well, who really might just need a year in a NFL strength program and has a chance too.

Either way, we should know more before those draft picks have to be spent.

Sure seems like we could fill one guard position fairly easily between all these options. Might be in the market for a RT too of course with those picks.

Can't we get out of Jawaan this year if we want? If Kingsley and Morris end up LT/RT you can easily pay Smith. I'm just not sure that its the right move still. Guards are getting stupid money. If you have a super man center and two above average tackles I'd feel alright at rolling the dice on guards a little.

Nope. You'd actually lose 5 million in cap cutting Taylor in 2025

Yeah - if you move off Taylor you'd have to trade him. It's not the signing bonus that kills you, it's the guaranteed salary.

His 2025 salary guaranteed at the start of 2024.

He's not getting cut and it's not terribly likely that anyone's gonna trade for him with a $19.5 million base salary in 2025. If he has a season that would convince teams to trade for him at that number then he's a guy you keep anyway.

He's here this year and next.
