Those guys aren't going to make those numbers in year one of their deals though.

Frank Clark
2nd round upgrade in 2020 (49ers pick)
3rd upgrade in 2019 (Seattle vs KC, 9 spots)

Unless you view Clark as a minimal upgrade from Ford, that seems pretty fair to me.

2019 #29 value: 640
2019 # 84 value: 170 (+ 38 from 93)

For sake of the 2020 pick, let’s say the 49ers improve and end up with the 14th pick in round 2: value: 440

If the Chiefs are in the bottom five of round 2 again, you’re looking at value ranging: 292-270 (+150-170)

Let’s keep the numbers round and say they end up gaining 200 draft value points overall. That’s the equivalent of a mid-3rd round pick.

... (edit)
Which means the overall payout in draft pick value equates to basically a mid-2nd
KC gives up: 640 for their first, and the 2020 swap is the equivalent of gaining about 60 points due to the devaluation of it being next year. Them swapping thirds this year is another 38 points.

So, the Chiefs net draft value is -540, which means the Chiefs traded:

Dee Ford
#36 pick in the draft

For

Frank Clark + his extension.

And this is at a team when NFL teams are valuing DBs more than edge rushers precisely because the edge rushers are only on the field 60-65% of the time. Had they made this trade for Jalen Ramsey, it makes a hell of a lot more sense. In the modern league, smart teams are running out a shitload of decent-but-not-great pass rushers and letting other teams pay out the ass for them. Look at what the Patriots do with their rushers and look who they pay.

That's every year. Every year there are less "first round grade" players than picks in the first round.

You can still find great players at 29. This draft is particularly deep. If someone like Greedy Williams or Montez Sweat somehow falls to 29 I wonder how we're all going to feel.

I didn’t panic that’s for sure. Chiefs have a tendency to find pretty good players in the mid rounds so I do give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bullshit. You're not going to have 32 guys with a first round grade, but less than 20 every year? Not buying that.
