Nate Taylor: Chiefs plan to extend Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith before season begins

Quote:
Throughout the next month — before the season opener Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens — the Chiefs will attempt to sign Humphrey and Smith to lucrative contract extensions, a feat that Veach has yet to achieve this time of the year in the previous six seasons during his tenure.

“Your hope is that everybody gets paid,” Mahomes said. “I tell Veach all the time: ‘You draft too well.’ It’s a good problem to have. I’m excited for those guys and it all gets handled in the right way. The hope is to keep this core together. I’ll have that flexibility in my contract to help get them some money as much as possible.”

Along with Humphrey and Smith, the Chiefs also want to sign linebacker Nick Bolton (entering the last year of his rookie contract) and kicker Harrison Butker (entering the final year of his contract) to multiyear extensions.

I'll trust Veach regarding Trey, but I'm a little surprised if he extends him as well.
Yep, Super Bowl LV, injured OL, and the Brady lauding afterwards is the true catalyst. They want to protect Mahomes and not embarrass the FO and Clark for negligence at IOL

ya let's go back to the days of trash interior line play because we don't want to pay interior lineman /s

At this point we can trust Veach to make good decisions

the line got revamped after that debacle and it worked out great, but you don't always have such stellar draft picks.

If Trey is reasonable and takes a slight discount to stay with a winner, I'm all for this... until Kingsley proves himself, those two are the core and future of this line

If you remember we had the Doc, reacquired Reiter, Wylie was kicked to RT because of the Thuney signing. Creed and Trey were suppose to be depth during their rookie year

Smith will be more valuable on other teams that actually run the ball, I don't see the Chiefs paying market price for Trey and he has no reason to take less.

Put me in the camp that thinks they'll extend Smith only at their price, but I don't think they're gonna offer the $20m AAV that he could get elsewhere.

He's a guy though who may not wanna leave for a few million. I'm sure when this version of the Chiefs is all you know, they took a major risk on you in the draft, and your best friend on the roster plays next to you, it's not easy to turn down $15-17m per year.
