John Sherman's Wife Makes Stunning Declaration on Royals/Chiefs Future

In comments under a public Facebook post, Marny Sherman said, "Unfortunately neither team will work with Jackson County again. The lack of leadership has lost the city two treasured assets."

Not a good look for an owner’s wife imho. Didn’t realize that she was also a spokesperson for the Hunt family.

All may be true, but it also true that other areas/cities are more than ready to step up to the plate. So it's a decision for the citizens. Do you want to live in a city without baseball?

Appeal to authority fallacies are terrible, especially when you are debating someone with a few semesters of Finance in Grad School that has developed real estate ; )

Not The Battery in Atlanta which is a mixed-use development as part of the Braves new stadium.

Taxable property values in the area have risen from $5 million to $736 million during the past decade.

$38 million in tax revenue generated for the county/city/state.

The development has attracted major business ventures such as Papa John’s global HQ relocating to be in the development.

You are against that type of economic development/impact?

Yeah, sometimes you have to rise above your own principles and figure out if it's really what you want... billionaires will keep being billionaires, but is it worth $140/year to have a football team in town while driving around those unrepaired potholes.

Nothing you'd understand, anyway. If you think the Street Car and P&L projects are legit (KC has picked up $160mm of the P&L tab, and the Street Car has no revenue and maintenance has already blown out original figures) but the stadiums "are not" legit because you don't like baseball, then there is nothing more to discuss.

Godspeed using the Battery as a positive example given its controversial choice of location.

Only controversial if you are myopically pro-downtown baseball.

They went to a suburban area of Atlanta more conveniently located for their fanbase.

I think the Royals misplayed this, but some of that I think is them trying to navigate a very difficult group of KC leaders.

This message went out on purpose. The teams are playing the victim role while belittling leadership and the voters. It doesn't look good for the headline to read "teams file divorce from loving fans, will remarry highest bidder".

Ok' Marny spells the whole thing out.. The Royals were always leaving K, they leveraged the chiefs success to get a deal that the city leadership does not like and didn't want to go to vote. I'm guessing Marny is right now in the back of her jet, headed to a game and then dinner in someone's 100th floor penthouse suite. It must be embarrassing to have to drive guests through KCMO for a game.

And it was impossible to get to with Atlanta’s bad traffic.

If the Braves can leave Fulton County, there is no reason the Royals couldn’t similarly leave Jackson County for a suburban location.

The main barrier appears to be imagination and initiative from Sherman.

Truist Park (the Braves new stadium) was a public/private finance deal between the team and Cobb County, but the surrounding mixed use development was mostly initiated by the team with a $400 million initial investment.

And they helped secure hotels, residential development, business develop, etc. They worked with Live Nation to redevelop a concert venue nearby.

They also partnered with Comcast and Papa John’s to bring their Southeast regional HQ and global HQ respectively to the development.

The Crossroads location was going to be a tough pass even with the Royals "answering all the questions" (which the Crossroads Association claims they did enough to enter into an agreement with them) so this whole coming back to the table with a better plan still seems like a loser especially with the bad taste in both sides mouth

If I were a JaCo resident I'd be a little put off by the Chiefs forcing me to choose between the Crossroads and Arrowhead with their plan that did nothing for the fans

And KC schools are always going to suck, so are the roads, its a ****ing city

The BEST solution to this whole thing:

1. The Royals get a new boutique stadium downtown. 37,500-40,000 max attendence. Needs some type of public transit option such as light rail.

2. The Chiefs get some improvements to stadium and rearrange the parking for better access.

3. Build a concert facility further away from Arrowhead that shares the parking lot. This way it becomes the Truman Sports and Entertainment Complex.

4. Allow a few hotels to be built there as well.

5. During summer they can do car shows, carnivals, flea markets and plenty of other events during summer months when there is no football to maximize the property.

Any downside to this?
