When you think about it, this team nearly went to the Super Bowl with the disaster at defense all season.
All we need is a DC that can get guys to buy in, know what they are doing, limit mistakes and help us upgrade the talent. We aren’t asking for an elite defense next season. It doesn’t matter what DC you have if you give them the secondary we had most of this season. It’s no wonder this defense looked a lot better when the younger guys were playing. It pisses me off bc we would be in the Super Bowl right now if Sutton simply coached this game with any sort of formidable plan. It’s just unbelievable how bad this game was coached by him. I really do believe myself or any of you guys could have been the DC and formulated a better gameplan/adjustments. That’s how bad it was. |

1) I'd rather have Spags over Sutton
2) I'd rather have Spags over an In House hire due to me wanting to completely clean house on defense. 3) Spags is probably my least favorite candidate out there of the names people have discussed. His DC coaching history in terms of DVOA (Much better than total defense or points againt IMO) he wasn't as bad IMO, if you take some things into consideration. Defensive DVOA Giants 2006 13th DVOA 15th pass, 11th rush (Pre Spags) 2007 13th DVOA 14th Pass, 9th Rush (SB Dominance) 2008 8th DVOA 10th Pass, 12th Rush Rams (HC) Took over a bad team, remained bad but did improve on defense. 2009 31st DVOA 29th Pass, 31st Rush 1-15 record 2010 19th DVOA, 19th Pass, 20th Rush 7-9 record 2011 21st DVOA, 14th Pass, 27th Rush 2-14 record (Horrid offense) Saints bad defense when he took over, Bounty Gate Greg Williams fired/Payton Suspended 2011 28th DVOA, 26th Pass, 21st Rush (Pre Spags) 2012 32nd DVOA, 28th Pass, 30th Rush (Bounty Gate Scandal) NYG 2014 24th DVOA, 21st Pass, 27th Rush (Pre-Spags) 2015 30th DVOA, 28th Pass, 21st Rush 2016 2nd DVOA, 4th Pass, 2nd Rush 2017 24th DVOA, 19th Pass, 26th Rush (tons of team turmoil under McAdoo) I feel a little better breaking it down but still not high at all. If he can assemble a good staff and they give him some bodies on defense, I think it could work. |

All Bob had to do was tell Eric no, you dont deserve to play in the AFC Championship game and we win that game. An average safety would have shut broke dick Gronk down. So whoever they hire all they have to do is play the best players and not just the highest paid ones and SB here we come.

Noooooo not the 4-3. However, just about anyone was an upgrade. Problem is our players are 3-4 players.

I think the line is pretty set honestly. Hitchens played well in a 4-3 and can play in all three LB positions. DoD could be fantastic in a 4-3 and fits better, imo, than an 3-4 ILB. Especially, in an aggressive 4-3 defense that Spags runs. |

I think a 4-3 would be a good change.

Ragland and Hitchens are so damn slow, as is Houston. We have two linebackers with speed, Ford and DOD, and one linebacker who looks like he is running in claymation, in Speaks. Ford is a very good pass rusher, but he is bad against the run. 3-4 linebackers need to be able to run to the ball, or their spot in pass coverage, or actually cover a RB or TE out of the backfield. Also 3-4 linebackers need to avoid engaging with offensive linemen in order to be able to run to the ball. Not only are our linebackers slow, but they have a very bad habit of stepping up directly into the offensive linemen allowing themselves to be easily blocked. It's one of the main reasons we cannot stop the run. Another reason this defense struggled against the run is Bob Sutton's inability to actually put 3 defensive linemen on the field at the same time. No matter how physical a linebacker is, offensive linemen firing out when run blocking usually win that battle at least 80% of the time. I believe with our current personnel, a 4-3 would put them in much better situations, where they have a chance to be successful. I have said it a thousand times, as many others on CP have, but Bob Sutton's worst attribute as a DC was his inability to adapt his scheme to fit the players on this roster. In my mind there is absolutely no acceptable reason to have Speaks or Houston trying to cover RBs and TEs one on one in down field pass coverage. In fact, I don't think Houston or Speaks should even be dropping back in zone more than 5 yards from the LOS. This season, neither Speaks nor Houston had a positive outcome in passing situations farther than 5 yards from the LOS. Whoever we get, and whatever scheme he runs, if the only adjustment he make is not asking players to do things they are physically incapable of doing, it will be an improvement. I'd like to get Weddle on a 1-year deal for cheap if possible. It sounds like he's going to be a Raven cap casualty. Pair him with Clinton Dix and draft Mack Wilson
The middle of the field wouldn't be a problem anymore. |
