They can’t get open, they drop passes in their hands, their jet sweeps are slow and terrible. These guys are not good.

That's certainty wasn't the scheme this game. Why didn't Mahomes take those wide open shots after being shown them on the pads? Did Reid say stick with the plan?
He was also abandoning some wide open checkdowns. He did this a few years ago too.

Some of it is not trusting the OL. But a more efficient offense requires consistent execution. You can grind a long drive and 1 drop kills it. If you miss a deep shot, there isn’t confidence that they can get 10 yards out of the next 2 Downs.

Mahomes was a plenty efficient qb a few years ago. It’s when his WRs killed drives and tipping INTs that we saw mahomes move more and more to hero ball. So he bails early which seems to be the main root of the problem when we see him miss guys like this.

If he thought Hardman or Moore were fundamental, high snap, high target receivers, maybe he got that wrong.

Rice is going to be the one that probably people base a lot of this off. If he looks like a solid player, and early signs seems promising, a lot of the criticism goes away imo.
Elway was a shit GM, period. No comparison to Veach at all.

I think this is all true, and we've seen it before for stretches, and they always work out of it. I see no reason why this wouldn't be the same now.

At the end of the day, it's just one game. And the first game of the season at that. Not a good idea to take too much from it, imo. Good or bad.

Yes, it's concerning that Skyy didn't get more targets, and that he couldn't come up with a single catch, especially since he's been projected as this year's "WR1." But Pat did throw a ball well behind him for one target and overthrew him for another.

And yes, it's unsettling that they performed so poorly against what was a bottom 5 defense last year, but DET did bring in 4 new DBs to upgrade that defense, so they were going to be better than what they were last year. Although the clips I've show that they didn't play all that well either, but probably they were better than what they were in 2022.

i really think the offense had itself a kind of collective brainfart. In other words, I think that won't happen again. At least not as bad as that.

It's a young inexperienced group, and they're going to have some clunky performances, similar to the Chiefs defense did back in 2019 to start the season. Fortunately, we'll get Travis back very soon, and he'll hide a lot of those issues going forward. Bottom line, I don't think we have anything to really worry about. Yet.

DHop would've caught every one of those dropped passes though.

We're about to see the screeniest offense ever next week. I bet a good chunk of our play will be some screen variation

We’ll be absolutely fine, we have Andy, Pat, and Travis. I have zero doubly we’ll be back in the AFCCG again when this all shakes out!
I'm fine with the loss. I'm sure they'll be in the hunt. But this board gets to a point if you question the personnel decisions it's like you're being disloyal, or not acknowledging they've won two superbowls. The hype about these receivers was ridiculous.

It was apparent coming into the season Mahomes is dealing with a bottom tier receiving group, with projects Moore and Toney as the top 2, come on. The front office seems to believe they can overcome that group's weakness because of the other strengths. That's a fine position to take, but let's not pretend the WR room isn't a liability.

There was nothing surprising about game 1. This is not a reaction to game 1. And if the group is reliant on their all world TE to make them appear decent, that's still bottom tier. I hope they live up to the hype, I just think it's unlikely and Mahomes will just have to deal.

Can Reid and Mahomes overcome it? Probably. But man like the thread title says...

The drops 100% sucked and Hutchinson is a monster, but Mahomes did not look comfortable. He played a lot like that stretch where he was getting hit a lot and he was abandoning a clean pocket.

He looked uncomfortable in pre-season games too. I also thought he looked slower while running in the Lions game compared to earlier years. Something is off with him at the moment.

It was not, and IS not apparent that this is a 'bottom tier' WR corps.

It IS, however, a young WR group, and so it does not have past production to rely on when projecting how they'll do.

The problem with you and others like you is, you can't wrap your head around the idea that EVERY WR is young and unproven until they've proved themselves.

I'd just about guarantee you that when it is all said and done, and the 2023 season is in the books, nobody will say that KC has a 'bottom tier WR group'.

when you're paying an elite QB, and have at least one elite defender to pay (like Chris Jones), and two OL you're paying big money, you cannot afford to pay an elite WR market price. You have to draft and develop your own, and this is what the Chiefs are doing.

They're not 'content to have Kelce and JAGS'. That's not the plan. That's not what they've spent considerable draft capital on. They're doing this now, because they KNOW Kelce won't be Kelce forever. They're making a concerted effort to draft and develop a quality WR group so that when Kelce slows down, Mahomes will still have quality weapons.

They simply got off to a rough start because 1)no Kelce 2) two new OT's for Mahomes to get used to and 3) jitters/yips/whatever you want to blame the dropsies on.

Veach, Reid, Nagy, and Mahomes aren't all stupid. It was just a bad game, we've had some of those every season, even when we had Hill and Watkins.

Overreacting and declaring any definitive judgement after game one on any of these guys is stupid.

It's not all that surprising.

He's got two new bookend OT's, had no Kelce, and a bunch of new WR's, some of whom just kept dropping the ball.

It's nothing to panic about. They just need game reps to get comfortable, and unfortunately, that's just the way it has to work. You can't simulate live game experience in practice, not entirely.

It's going to be fine. The WR's aren't going to drop 6 balls and hand over pick sixes every week, the OT's held up better than Mahomes appeared to expect, Kelce will come back, and there were open receivers downfield that he missed and he'll see that on tape and be looking for them.

It's going to be okay.
