It still all starts with stopping the run. Rex Ryan has been damn good with the Ravens and the Jets. He started a transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4, which is why he ultimately failed. His defense still works--look at the Ravens. He's a brilliant football mind and the attitude needed to back it up. He can adjust. He's the most successful defensive coach against NE and Tom Brady (during his prime even) that you will find. Allegedly, he's gotten offers to get back into it but has turned them down. Maybe he needed a break? If he didn't, it has nothing to do with his ability to coach a defense. Rex Ryan would coach circles around Spags. Plus, with Ryan, this defense doesn't have to overhaul its front 7. Spags, the Chiefs might take another 2 seasons for this defense to get respectable if he doesn't fail. On a side note, I had no idea Bill Snyder hired him in 1999. He only stayed for a month before jumping to the Ravens. |

The Chargers defense went from a 3-4 in 2016 to a 4-3 in 2017 and instantly got better. I don’t know that it’s really that big of a deal. A lot of the current players probably fit the 4-3 better anyways.

Your DL has to IMMEDIATELY push the pocket in and take away the QB's throwing lanes and force him to move. If you don't do that, the ball is out in 2.5 seconds. See Tom Brady. You have to have tons of speed off the edge. Wade Phillips and Fangio understand this. Ryan doesn't. He still has his DL eating up blockers and playing 2-gap. He had a premiere pass rusher in Mario Williams who dominated in Pettine's 3-4 scheme and he decided to use him as a space eater instead. Boy would that be a waste to force Chris Jones to play 2-gap. Your ILBs have to cover a shitload of space to account for the spread. Fangio, Martindale, Phillips... they all have undersized LBs who can sprint from sideline to sideline. Rex Ryan is the guy who begged his team to draft Reggie Ragland. The exact opposite. It's been pointed out that Ryan's blitz pressures were built for QBs who used to 5-step and 7-step drop. QBs today play shotgun with 3-step drops. |

Rex Ryan told his co-worker Schefter to float his name out there so he could create some buzz around his name. |

Ford and Houston wouldn’t be linebackers in a 4-3, they would be defensive ends. Ford would be undersized for that role, but if he squeezed in this year the dline would likely be ford, jones, nnadi, houston. I think hitchens would excel in a move back to a 4-3, and possibly odaniel if he packed on a few lbs. we would most certainly have to add a linebacker through the draft or free agency. |

That means over his last 11 games coached against Tom Brady, Rex Ryan is 1-10 and his defenses have allowed exactly 30 points per game. |

wat have the Pats averaged points per game in the last 18 years of their dynasty? if we shave .2 points from that total with an astute hire, we will prevail! errr
