Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

After countless shortlist stories and rumors concerning who would play Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the search for the lead role is finally over, and fittingly the actor is someone who never appeared on any of the aforementioned lists. Deadline reports that Chris Pratt has been tapped to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a character who was born of a human mother and alien father, and is a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. As Guardians features a cast of strange and cosmic characters, Quill was an important role to fill because he will likely act as the audience’s introduction to the vast, unfamiliar Guardians world. Hit the jump for more.

There were plenty of actors rumored for the role that made a lot of sense (John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, etc.), and Deadline notes that Marvel made test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but Chris Pratt actually seems like a perfect fit. His comic timing is excellent as evidenced by his work on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and he’s shown his talent on the dramatic side with Moneyball and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, for which he also proved that he can beef up for a role if need-be.

Looking back on the previous shortlists and taking Pratt into consideration, it’s clear that writer/director James Gunn is planning on injecting a good amount of humor into Guardians of the Galaxy. A rumor surfaced recently that Marvel was looking at possibly tapping Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler to do voice work in the film (one of the guardians is a talking raccoon), so I’m interested to see the tone that Gunn settles on for the finished film.

With the role of Star-Lord secure, Gunn and Marvel now look to filling out the rest of the cast, which includes the powerful Drax the Destroyer, a giant tree named Groot, the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon, and the female lead Gamora. The story is also rumored to involve the villain Thanos. Expect to hear more soon as production gears up to begin later this year. Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

Adam Warlock is definitely badass... It's complicated. He was actually (kinda) shown in the previous GotG movie, here...

That's supposedly Adam Warlock's cocoon. But there's a bunch of licensing rights involved with him, so it's really not determined whether they can use him, as far as I've heard. Check out his history: http://marvel.com/universe/Warlock,_Adam

One of my favorite pages from Infinity Gauntlet #3, Warlock is riding Surfer's board with him...

If I remember right his license issues are due to the fact that his first appearance was in a Fantastic Four series? Sadly, many of the characters from the Infinity Saga are tied up for the same reason. Going to be very disappointed not to see Galactus and Silver Surfer.

Yeah, Galactus and Surfer were staples of the Infinity Gauntlet/Wars series. It will suck for the little nerd kid in me to not see them mix up with Thanos on the big screen.

I threw Warlock out as a guess because his cocoon is seen in the Collector's lair. I think it was next to Cosmo and a Dark Elf. /nerd

I always dug the cosmic storylines Marvel put out. I'm really hoping the abbreviated movies coming out do them justice.

I hope so too, but I have pretty low expectations. While I really enjoyed the Civil War movie, it was a very pale imitation of a copy of a shadow of the original storyline. I'm sure Infinity will be good movies, but there's pretty much no way they could adapt all that content into just a few hours.

I loved how they put in the little easter egg of Rocket and Cosmo instantly not liking each other. To a casual fan it just looks like one animal growling at another one but in the comics they were always insulting each other.

I have hope after the Spiderman agreement.

Surfer is tied to the Fan4Stick rights so I can't imagine it taking much to pry that away. That property is ****ing worthless and only has any value because they know Disney/Marvel want it...

Fantastic 4 also have the rights to Annihilus, another great villain (not to mention Dr. Doom). The value of the F4 lies in the villains, not the heroes.
