Connor Embree - 1st Year WR Coach

Kid better button shit up.

Quote:
Connor Embree returns for his fifth season with the Chiefs and enters the 2023 season as the team's wide receivers coach after spending two seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2021-22) and two seasons as a defensive assistant (2019-20).

Embree again worked closely with the wide receiver corps in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach assisting an offense that led the league in receiving yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) passing first downs (272), receptions of 25+ yards (49) and points per game (29.2). Embree helped develop a new group of veteran receivers (JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson) who accounted for over 20 percent of the Chiefs receiving touchdowns. Smith-Schuster led the team's wide receiver group with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three trips to the endzone. Fifth-year receiver Valdes-Scantling had two regular season touchdowns and a career-high two postseason touchdowns. He stepped up big as the team battled through injuries in the AFC Championship Game, with 116 yards receiving off six receptions, three catches of 25+ yards and one touchdown en route to the team's Super Bowl LVII win.

In 2021, Embree worked primarily with the wide receivers group. WR Tyreek Hill recorded a career high 111 receptions for 1,239 yards en route to his sixth Pro Bowl nomination. WR Mecole Hardman ranked third on the team, recording career highs in catches (59) and yards (693).

In 2020, Embree primarily worked with the defensive backs who featured AP All-Pro S Tyrann Mathieu who led all safeties in the NFL with six interceptions and rookie CB L'Jarius Sneed who showed a lot of potential in the nine games he saw action (six starts). He snagged three interceptions, 2.0 sacks (-19.0 yards) and seven passes defensed.

In his first season with the Chiefs (2019), Embree primarily worked with a linebacking group that accounted for 5.5 sacks and 275 tackles in his role as a defensive assistant. LB Anthony Hitchens led the team in tackles with 88 and was responsible for 2.0 of the unit's 5.5 sacks.

Before jumping to the professional ranks, he spent two seasons on Coach David Beaty's staff at the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant where he gained experience working with the offense and special teams.

He also spent time in the high school ranks as the offensive coordinator at Blue Valley West High School and as the wide receivers coach at Fairview High School.

Embree played wide receiver for the Kansas Jayhawks (2011-13). He also spent one season at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2010).

Education: University of Kansas (B.S. 2013). Born: Superior, Colorado. Family:Wife - Alex.

College Career as WR
Quote:
2012 (So.): Did not see any game action. KU Record:1–11 (0–9 Big 12)

2011 (RS): Sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules after joining KU from UNLV.

2010 (Fr. at UNLV): Spent the 2010 season at UNLV, but took a redshirt. UNLV Record: 2–11 (2–6 MW)

High School: Was a quarterback as a senior in high school… Played free safety and recorded three interceptions as a junior… Earned second-team all-Eastern Kansas League honors… Was a three-year letterwinner… Also played basketball.

Personal: Born in Superior, Colo… Son of Natalyn and Jon Embree… Has one brother and one sister… Father served as the head coach at Colorado (2011-12), and has made assistant coaching stops at Colorado and UCLA in college football and the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins in the NFL… Brother, Taylor, played football at UCLA… Plans to major in communications… Would like to be a football coach… Main hobby is playing video games.

idc about the interview but when almost all of your receivers are basically trash one would start to look at the position coach.

And on other side, the DB coach is probably going to be looked at for a DC job or some shit.

The guy isn’t doing shit with a first round talent, 2 second round talents and a HOF guy throwing to them and a HOF guy taking top defenders away that plays another position. Did I mention the offensive line is also elite?

The good news is that if his group shows improvement the rest of the way, he will get to take the credit for the turnaround…but for now, he looks like he’s in over his head.

Andy should have given more thought to hiring his WR coach than simply promoting a glorified intern.

This chicken shit WR group needed an experienced WR coach.

There isn’t a WR Coach around that’s going to improve a group of guys that can’t catch the ****ing ball. It’s the most basic ****ing function of being a NFL WR and ouR group absolutely sucks at it.

Not just drops, general ball security has been a problem this year. Kelce fumble tonight, several fumbles against Denver (Mahomes/MVS/Hardman), and Mahomes has a bunch of very dumb INT's on top of the fumbles. Very hard to win games with those kind of mistakes.

Even if Patrick makes a mistake, he does enough to come back and try to win games. Can the same thing be said about the wide receivers? The wide receivers are the issue. They simply can't catch.

I keep hearing how the receivers are improving. What are they improving?
I don't know why people keep saying Justin is our best. What is it that he is the best at? Our best at dropping passes at critical times and running the wrong route? If the ball is thrown to him 10 times, he will catch about 4.

Our WR are visibly football dumb. Things like running routes, helping out the QB, and leveraging your physical skills to get open are coachable skills that our WR lack. Establishing a spirit of accountability where the WR take responsibilities for drops and spend 90 minutes a day outside of scheduled time on the jugs is something he has influence over. Look how hard Mahomes works with his personal trainer on top of team activities to be the best.

Quality control coach is a film and spreadsheet jockey. Totally different skill set than correcting basic on the field technique, which is where the unit is failing. He should share in the blame.

Sure but how much of that is instinct? Watson and Mvs aren’t dumb. But we have a lot of athletes who just don’t seem to have a feel for the game. End of day a lot of these WRs are who they always were. Mvs and watson are the same inconsistent guys they were last year and their prior careers. Skyy just doesn’t seem to have that football iq. Toney felt like lightning in a bottle but maybe he’s more the guy giants fans warned he was, a guy who just doesn’t process a playbook well.

So much as we want to point to WR regression, have they really? The offense regressed and I know it’s hard to come to grips with how our offense has regressed while the players are largely the same. I think it has way more to do with kelce regression, better defenses, and maybe a lot of last year was more right place right time than we want to acknowledge.

If it’s as simple as running the wrong drills I can’t see Andy, who is a micromanager of this offense, letting any of that shit fly.

Say what you want about MVS hands and Watson being a JAG but I don't think I've ever seen them consistently **** up routes like we saw last night. When one or two guys do it it's a player problem. When the entire ****ing room is gacking the most rudimentary shit it's time to start looking deeper than just the personnel.
