Some chatter today about Mahomes drifting too far from the pocket
Thoughts?

I was stating that I thought Schwartz was talking more about how Mahomes could help the offensive line by staying at a more shallow depth in the pocket. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk |

It seems to me that his tenancy to drift farther back in the pocket than most QB's enables him to make plays that most QB's can't make and wouldn't attempt. There is a side effect in that it makes it harder for his tackles to stop a hard rusher because the further back he goes, the straighter the line that the rusher has to travel, and it's harder to stop them. Get back to me when he's sacked 5 and 6 times in a game.
Yes, his style makes it harder on the tackles. But the benefits FAR outweigh the liabilites, at least so far. He's aware of this "deficiency" and so are the tackles. This is called "finding something...ANYTHING...to criticize about Mahomes". TL\DR - No one curr... |

Id also say that while it won us a super bowl and at LAC, those two games also exposed a problem. Teams with strong outside rushes will give us a problem. We saw mahomes start to do that later in the game but it was almost too little too late. Drifting may work in a lot of games but we may want to avoid vs defenses like SF and LAC. |

Have we all forgotten pat calling himself out on this last year when he was injured? He came back and stepped up more and we lit the world on fire. Sure there are plays called that far back but not every damn one, and surely the tackles know when it is a deep drop, so they wouldnt run the rusher straight to him..

Hows about our OL stop playing like complete dog shit and then Mahomes wont have to constantly keep doing Superman things to bail our asses out.

They both say it's a positive and it's done on purpose because it helps open up the running lanes for him to take off. He drifts so far back that the DL's blow their gaps and allow Pat to run right through them. It's a huge part of why he succeeds as a scrambler. He's effectively manipulating the DL. The DE's basically either have to mush rush and and not over extend, or over extend and allow huge running lanes for Mahomes. |

I'm not buying that he was doing it on purpose every time. I think its a bad habit he got back into with poor line play. I think its done on purpose in rare occasions like wasp.

The "Cam Erving Effect" ... recently replaced by the "Wylie Effect".
It plays havoc on the tackles. FAX |

The Bolts rush made him look bad. On the other hand, Mahomes' deep drifty drops aren't helping. Normally, Schwartz would push the outside guy and let him go wide, then recover to clean up as the rusher overshoots. FAX |
