Teams are in various sub packages 60+% of the time. Does it really matter if it is a 3-4 or 4-3?

Spags has a lot more recent failures than successes. On paper he's an underwhelming choice, but at least it isn't Sutton or Heck.

I'm not sure that qualifies as actual "thinking".

We'd have to dig a little deeper to be certain.

This is true and I've made the argument against changing for this reason in the past.

However; I can see some merit to the idea that conceptually, nothing changes for your front four EVER regardless of what the alignment in the back 7 is other than whatever stunts/blitzes you dial up. Essentially, their job becomes much simpler and is the same more or less.

You just have one less LB and one more CB in the nickel. Coverages may change, but not the front 4. you won't see Houston if he stays as a DE in coverage, for example, unless it's some weird ass zone blitz.

That consistency of purpose may have some dividends.

3-4 defense sucks ass. I ****ing hate that defense. Mainly because to make it work you have to have 330 pound fat ass who can dominate the middle. Very rare to find those.

What would this guy have done different on Sunday?

If he can convenience me that he could of stopped Brady in the end, then I would agree to have him hired...

Need facts, not message board hearsay.

He ran the defense that stopped the 07 Pats in SB.

Pretty sure they are NOT going to let you interview Spags, so...

That's not what hurt is though. It was the communication and talent in the secondary.

Spags, yards per play:

2012: 6.5 (worst in the league and perhaps worst ever)
2016: 5.1 (easily top ten in the league. we were middling at 5.5)
2017: 5.7 (we were 5.6, both us in Giants in the high 20s)

Summary: One historically bad year, 2017 was essentially our 2017 D, and 2016 was pretty darn good.

It's not universally bad, but it takes some homerism to get excited about. You have to discount 2012 and 2017. If somehow the D performs more like his 2016 unit, we should easily be the best team in the league.

Edit: Forgot about 2015, #31 at 6.1. We were at 5.1. Ugh.

So, because you wanted someone else that was never a realistic possibility and have an opinion that this is a shit hire, you require 'facts' that are inherently impossible to provide?

OK.

Dude. There are some pretty serious situational shitshows that have nothing to do with Spags and his scheme in both of those years.

2012 the head coach and defensive coordinator are both suspended by the league. Spags steps in, tries to pilot the ship. Not his groceries, not his staff, not his team, totally ****ed situation.
2017 major injuries to the defense while the offense simultaneously implodes and the head coach gets fired. Clearly there were some mitigating circumstances there.

Let's just all agree he's better than Bob Sutton and with a little bit more talent can get us into a top 16, middle of the pack defense.

That's what matters.
