Patrick Mahomes is now the overwhelming NFL MVP favorite

NFL odds: After Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes is now the overwhelming NFL MVP favorite

Frank Schwab 2 hrs ago

We can cease and desist with any debate about someone other than Patrick Mahomes being the NFL MVP favorite.

You’ll hear people argue that Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, Alvin Kamara or anyone else should be “in the conversation,” but the only real talk is that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is the overwhelming favorite until further notice. Everyone else is vying for NFL offensive player of the year, though Mahomes should probably win that too.

Sunday night’s heroics, leading a game-winning drive over the Las Vegas Raiders everyone knew was coming, solidified Mahomes’ position. He’s the best player in football and he’s having a phenomenal year.

The odds at BetMGM reflect that.

Mahomes is -118 to win MVP at BetMGM. Next on the list is Wilson at +350. Aaron Rodgers is +550 and nobody else is less than 12-to-1.

All the talking heads have basically given the MVP to Rodgers already.

True.

But in 2018 they were all trying to talk themselves (and the voters) into Drew Brees as well over Mahomes because . . . . . completion % and GWD. That's it. Mahomes had everything else on him and had one of the all time great seasons for a QB. When it came time to vote, the voters overwhelmingly chose Mahomes.

Not saying the same thing will happen this time. But it's interesting to note. The media sets the narrative (or attempts to), but the voters do their own thing.

I personally could care less whether they give it to Mahomes or Rodgers. All that matters is Lombardi's. Aaron can have the MVP and another premature playoff exit.

Forget about it.

If Mahomes lights up the Saints the MVP discussion is over. It'll go to Mahomes. The National Media has a 2-game attention span.

There was a point in 2018 in which Brees had something absurd like a 28:2 TD:INT ratio, IIRC. He promptly fell off a clif around week 12 or so when they played the Cowboys, but mid season Brees MVP hype wasn't totally unjustified. Plus he was a legacy guy who'd never won an MVP so sort of like the Russell Wilson hype train earlier this year (which was also justified), it made sense.

Rodgers could potentially wrap up a top 5 season for a QB as far as statistics are concerned and that'd give him two for his career. Dude's surgical and there's no shame if he takes the MVP.

The media sets the narrative.

Who do you think selects the winner?

He predictably fell off a cliff. No qb has ever been coddled by schedule more than drew brees. He was predictably bad once you put him off turf especially with colder weather. He was having a very good but not mvp year up to that point. Rodgers on the other hand is having a legit MVP season.

Rodgers is likely going to finish this game with less than 150 yards passing 1 TD and 1 rushing touchdown.

MVP is back on the menu

Rodgers has had several games where he’s thrown for very few yards.

He’s way down the list in that category.

Yeah the touchdown stat is the most important one.

So apparently Rodgers now has the record for most seasons with 40+ touchdowns. It took him 13 seasons as a starter to get three.

Mahomes has a very good chance at getting his second such season in his third as a starter.
