Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes

Jude Law as Watson

Do you buy Holmes as a buffed up action hero?

The history of the character? I know enough to know that Downey Jr's life experiences make him pretty ideal to play the role.

Except the not being British part, you mean? So, you have not ever read any of Conan Doyle's Holmes stories, correct?

I have never read a Sherlock Holmes book. I know nothing about the guy... at all.
Are they worth reading? Do they hold up? Will it take me 2 minutes per page just to figure out what they are saying?

Yes, read them. Most are short stories, anyway.

A lot of times, when I get to reading something older, the language makes it a little cumbersome.

If you have a modicum of intelligence then the prose will not give you any trouble. These stories were mostly printed in the early 1900's. Its not Shakespeare (though I don't think that Shakespeare is particularly difficult, either).
