You're going to see a LOT of very old highlights this week like what coach just posted. There are just so many to choose.

The 1978 playoffs. Game 3 at Yankee stadium in the afternoon. Was must see TV. Catfish Hunter on the mound. Brett hits 3 consecutive solo shots off Hunter. Two of them were huge shots. One to the 3rd deck in RF the second a blast to the 410 mark in CF. The 3rd was a shot over the 358 mark in RCF.

SIDEBAR

The defending World Series Champion Yankees, who faltered and were left for dead in the heat of July were 14 games back of the Red Sox. But then it all happened. Sox slump badly in August, the Yankees heat up and charge down the stretch cutting the lead to 4 games. A four game series is then played in Boston in early September and the Red Sox have the chance to put some distance between them and the yankees again. But in a series that became known as the Boston Massacre, the Yankees sweep the series scoring 42 ****ing runs to tie for the AL East lead. One of those games the yankees punched out 16 singles. They beat the shit out of Boston.

END SIDEBAR

The Royals, down 4-3 in the 8th and facing Goose Gossage, scratch out an Amos Otis 2b, a bloop single by Porter scores AO to tie it. LaCock strikes out and then a single by Clint Hurdle puts runners at 1st and 3rd. Al Cowens (my man AC!!) drives a hard ground ball that kind eats up SS Bucky Dent, who only manages to get the force at second and the runner scores from 3rd to give the Royals the lead. And then

SIDEBAR - I still have not forgiven Doug Bird for this.

END SIDEBAR -

Bottom 8. Splitorff is pitching a great game. Paul Blair pops out. Roy White singles. Herzog, playing the %'s, brings in RH Doug Bird (who had not pitched well all year) to face Thurman Munson. Falls behind 2-0 and on the next pitch delivers a belt high palm ball that must have looked like a GD beach ball to Munson. He hits it into the stratosphere before it drops into the monuments in LCF. Yea, death valley of Yankee stadium.

SIDEBAR

Munson had injured his shoulder in June and had not hit a HR in 2.5 months. Not only that, but this was the heyday of the Bronx Zoo. Marting fueding with jackson. Jackson fueding with Gossage. Munson fueding with Steinbrenner, Sparky Lyle running his dick over the coldcuts in the clubhouse. Munson demandina trade out of the organization to Cleveland of all places - his hometown. ****ing nuthouse.

END SIDEBAR

Yankees close it out in the 9th and drive the stake through the Royals the next night with Guidry winning 2-1.

th/dr - **** you Doug Bird

That was herzogs fault. Munson owned Bird, and he still brought him into pitch to him.

Sidebar_ Munson was playing in the outfield earlier in the summer (to save his knees) and ran into the right field wall and separated his right shoulder. He played the rest of the year with a separated shoulder (1978) and won the World Series. He quietly had off season surgery to repair it. My favorite player growing up. He was tough, and they never recovered losing him.

My mom and I watched a Royals playoff win together for the first time today (I was in college during the runs in 14-15, and the two games we watched together were both losses). This weekend, we’ll get to watch the Royals and Yankees face off again for the first time in 44 years.

This is what led to that

Now these Yankees suck. Royals have a good chance to sweep them. Their pitching has been like a jeckyl and hyde show and they can’t manufacture runs without the longball. Bullpen has sucked too this year. I’m not expecting much

That's right. And he had a tremendous collision with Willie Wilson at home plate in that same series.

Feels a lot like the orioles series. A lot of big bats but very capable of duffing a bunch of games

Yankees lineup is pretty good outside the obvious big guns. But super erratic and with some big holes. The pitching is underwhelming. Cole is a legit ace who’s been erratic in big games especially this year. Gil is ok but young. Rodon and stroman are powder kegs. Blah bullpen, super suspect closer.

How's your pitching going to line up? I assume Wacha/Ragans/Lugo?
