How I Met Your Mother
Maybe it is because I am a church geek, but this is comedy gold to me!!! I have no idea if this got embedded or not.

It's just now getting ginned up, but they have;
Mia [Hope Davis] a former patient from the beginning of his practice who's now a big trial attorney. Ran into her because she intercepted his dossier when he came in to meet with legal counsel about a lawsuit filed by the father of Alex who blames him for Alex crashing his jet. Basically, she blames him for a life without a family because she sensed, back in the day, that Paul thought she should abort a child she was expecting with a drummer BF as she was finishing law school [which she did]. She's also coming off an extramarital affair with her boss [she's single, he's married]. Walter [Frasier's Dad, John Mahoney], a corporate bigwig who's had panic attacks since youth, after his older brother [the golden child, full ride to Harvard pending] drowned and his body was swept away never to be recovered. He's got all these tainted formula, tainted food problems in his international company going on, and his daughter has gone to sub-Saharan Africa to care for the indigent, which he interprets as placing herself in mortal danger. Basically a type-A with a pending annuerism. April [Alison Pill, the 'good daughter' in Pieces of April], a student who is in complete denial about a serious and recent cancer diagnosis, her brother has autism, and she doesn't want to burden anyone with letting them know, and she doesn't want treatment [which is an underlying issue for Paul who's in the middle of the whole Alex/didn't stop the suicide, drama]. And Oliver an AA teen whose parents are divorcing [along with his parents in the session, insofar as they can keep from arguing], their attempts to shield him have the effect of him not knowing what he's supposed to do, say, how he's supposed to act/react, etc. Doesn't know if they are or 'might be' divorcing, didn't know that they'd stopped efforts to adopt a brother for him, etc. And of course there's the stuff with Gina, he's divorced and practicing in NY now, comes back to CT for therapy and to see his kids on the WE, also he hooked up with a married former childhood sweetheart, who's a) married, and b) another patient of Gina's. |

Yeah, hasn't had enough episodes to qualify for must see, but it holds promise. The 'zombie' bit was surprisingly touching, though it's disconcerting to think of Amber Tamblin as a sexual being, since I just got around to seeing Joan of Arcadia last fall [though I have finally gotten past her creeping out of that well in The Ring].

I like both of those as well. The difference for me is the writing and content. The office relies more on stupid comedy - facial expressions, actions and easy jokes. Big Bang Theory has humorous characters - Sheldon, Howard and Rajesh - it has spectacular underlying humor through dialogue. I especially enjoy it being an engineer and having a science/technical background.

There's so much going for that show. They're smart about not limiting it to Alison's [albeit very creative] mystery solving arc, but the family dynamic and the fleshing out of their characters [are there three . . . I'd say adorable, but the teen is a little old for adorable, she's more of a 'credible' teen, . . kids in TV right now], and the husband both flummoxed and supportive, as best he can be, of what's going on around him.
The solid, credible, network of friends and family around her really enhances the entire experience. |

This week was the season Finale for The Big Bang Theory, but next week is the Finale for How i Met your Mother. This show is really going to piss me off if they dont reveal the mother in the next episode. 4 episodes is long enough to drag it out.
I like the show, but they need to finally get there. Even if they dont fall in love at first sight, but at least show who the hell she is already. |
