*****The Patrick Mahomes Thread*****

IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

Ok back to the game for a minute - that high cover 2 shell has given Pat fits for years now.

The Bungles run it a bit better than most, but Tampa ran it and perfected it but you need the backers for it, with at least a great edge rusher as well. Sound familiar?

So when Romo said they dare the Chiefs to run, that is what they do. And we did run the ball very effectively. The issue is, once you get into the red zone it gets small in there and the fact is, we haven't been great in the red zone for years.

So this is why we struggle against this Bangles team year after year. And I think we're going to see more of this defense again in coming weeks since this offense doesn't look any better than lats year (possibly worse?) and Pat is not playing well. Look, the dude is gonna go down as one of the greatest of all times, but it's also fair to say that he's struggling the last year+ compared to years past (yes we just won the SB I'm talking about his regular season play).

It's odd to me that we don't come in more prepared against that cover 2 shell...but also Andy has gotten stupid coonservative in his play calling. 4th and goal from the 1 and we kick a FG???

Which shows how overrated stats can be when taken out of context.

Brady didn't care about stats, he was all about winning. I believe Pat is built from the same type of mindset which is good for us Chief fans. There's no better feeling than that SB victory.

Andy’s short yardage playcalling is not very good. He made a good choice to kick the FG. They lose that game if they fail on 4th down instead of getting those 3 points. We just saw it happen to the Eagles where they lost a game by 1 point after failing on 4th & Goal in the 1st Quarter.

Windows get tight down there and you've gotta trust guys to be in spots. It just doesn't seem like Pat does? I dunno.

Andy took the ball out of Mahomes’ hands on that sequence. Two straight runs up the middle for zero gain. But I think it was a good choice to kick the FG. Eagles sure wish they did it last night.

I’d argue that’s the case for any QB who played prior to about 2004 or so as Garoppolo also has a career passer rating higher than Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Steve Young and Kurt Warner.

In any case, Brady wasn’t bad prior to 2007. Take a gander at the leading passers for each year from 2002-2006. Brady was typically inside the top 10 for passing yards and TD:INT ratio. Then consider the offensive weapons he was working with during that timeframe.

https://www.pro-football-reference.c...02/passing.htm

Even if I concede that he was mid for the six seasons prior to breaking out in 2007, he still had basically seventeen more seasons of elite QB play lol

I really wish the clock was down to the last few seconds of the half when they were considering letting him try from 67. Obviously it would be too risky to try with enough time for Cinci to do anything, but I think he would have made it.

Very good point.
Andy's conservative decisions throughout a game, more often than not have favored the Chiefs in winning said game. You can't argue with the results.

I don't really mind kicking field goals when they're damn near guaranteed. Indeed I'd take them in most scenarios if I were the head coach. You don't lose too many games taking points when they're available. What I would NOT do is punt the ball from my own 45 for a net of 20 yards. That shit drives me crazy and I don't see how the analytics favor that at all. They just can't.

I don't mind the FG a bit.

But like you, some of the punt decisions are strange to me.

The punt from the 50 made sense -- way too much time in the event Butker misses. And that's a looooooooong kick. Something like 26 seconds and 2 timeouts for the Bengals and McPherson is a good kicker in his own right. That's one completion away from a FG for Cincy.

But the punt in the Baltimore game is crazy.

And you know what's really crazy about it? The Chiefs have no compunction at all with allowing the opponent to start a drive on the 30 yard line every single time. They are clearly giving it to them on the kickoffs with those touchebacks.

So they're fine with them starting at the 30...but not the 40? Why? What in the hell sense does that make?

Andy has the best kicker in the world at his disposal and for some strange reason, felt that it was just too risky to let them start a drive at the 40 when they've have started from the 30 had he actually made the kick.

I didn't get that one at all.
