In the article I posted, which was the 2015 hiring article, he was planning to start two rookie safeties.

Not bad, but they definitely weren't the best pass-rushing team. When you see a defense like Baltimore's, the difference is night and day. And they brought it vs everyone, while the Chiefs seemed to pad their stats vs poor lines/opponents. Then they go up against a really good Patriots line and can't sniff Brady.

I’m glad it’s a more experienced guy than Mike Smith. I hope Andy will emphasize to him that the defense needs to be aggressive. Don’t let the other team hold the ball for 70% of the game.

BB builds his defenses extremely similarly though. Belichick isn't a waterbug guy; he builds heavy LB corps and just disguises his coverages well enough to make up for it.

There are still ways to utilize guys like Hightower in a system so long as you build your system around those guys. You can't just have one of them out there and the rest of it built for speed.

I'm not saying it's my preferred course - but it's an approach you can win with and we may be reaching something of a 'moneyball' style tipping point with it. If the market on those kinds of players falls so far that they can be had for a fraction of what faster, more athletic LBs can be acquired for (in terms of $$ or draft capital) then perhaps that kind of zig while everyone else zags approach can work.

Now THAT would be risky as hell. But Belichick's defenses simply have zero team speed and he's still able to dial up some stuff that can be pretty effective at times. If you can find a market inefficiency there that helps you contain costs on your defense....well, it's a thought.

If they're going to change everything, yes. Rip the band-aid off and just release Houston, tag Ford and get what you can out of him in a trade and move forward.

Perhaps the most convoluted argument on behalf of Ragland that could ever be made. My compliments. LOL

Has ties to Reid, though. They have mutual respect for each other. Perfect fit.

Here's the bright side post....
He's outstanding with defensive backs. No more DB's tripping over their dick figuring out where to be.

His scheme is actually somewhat on trend. Relies heavily on the front 4 to generate pressure. Lots of speed at lb.

Maybe pairing a smart guy with the offense guru who masterminded the spread could

His most recent D and maybe the best representation of him as a DC of today was the second years giants defense. Which was actually very good.

I have no doubt we'll be much better. Will we be above mediocre? He needs to prove that to me.
