It doesn't matter who likes him first. He didn't draft him. Dorsey did. And Dorsey had Ballard, a guy widely considered to be the best talent evaluator in the league, go to Lubbock, TX to take a look at him.

“Brett, obviously with retrospect now, did a tremendous job on scouting Patrick and then getting first, Andy, and then later, John Dorsey, excited about him,” Hunt told reporters in October. “It truly was an organizational decision to draft him, so I don’t want to minimize that, but Brett deserves a lot of the credit.”
Based on their intel, Cabott said they expected Mahomes would be taken shortly after the ninth pick. He described the lineup of the Bills, Saints, Browns and Cardinals at the 10th through 13th picks as the “hot corner” for Mahomes. Man, I wonder how Dorsey knew the exact draft position to trade up for Mahomes. A reasonable person would credit the relationship between Veach and Cabbott and the subsequent Intel on who else was interested, but Veach doesn't deserve any of the credit so we must look elsewhere, I suppose. |

Dorsey wouldn’t have even had someone to trade up for had Veach not brought Patrick to the table

You do realize Ballard was the Colts GM during the Mahomes draft, correct?

So yet another piece of information confirming what everyone else on here has already said; Veach was the one pounding the table for Mahomes and getting everyone else in the Chiefs front office excited about him. Yes, Dorsey made the trade and the pick, but he wouldn’t have done ANY of that without Veach’s legwork. So again, Veach is the MAIN reason Mahomes is here. |
