The fact that it was all open air, hot and humid probably makes it safer than standing in line at Wal-mart.

Missouri health officials call for self-quarantine after Ozarks pool party, issue travel advisory

A now-viral, 16-second video clip of a crowded pool party in Lake of the Ozarks on Memorial Day weekend has drawn criticism from local health officials.

Bing COVID-19 tracker: Latest numbers by country and state

Citing recent news reports of the large crowds at Lake of the Ozarks, St. Louis County Department of Public Health issued a travel advisory Monday. The department said those who traveled and/or failed to adhere to social distancing guidelines should self-quarantine for 14 days or until they receive a negative test result for COVID-19.

“This reckless behavior endangers countless people and risks setting us back substantially from the progress we have made in slowing the spread of COVID-19,” County Executive Sam Page said in a statement. “I encourage everyone to follow the Department of Public Health advisory to determine a safe path forward in the workplace.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The public health department already recommends employers screen employees for health risks, but added that employers should also consider asking about recent travels and social distancing behaviors.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said on Twitter Monday that while many safely enjoyed the lake this weekend "too many did not," citing the possibility for asymptomatic spread.

"If you were part of a group that didn’t socially distance or wear masks, please, for the health of your family, coworkers and friends, stay home for the next 14 days," she said in a tweet.

Rex Archer, director of the Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department, shared a video of the pool party on Twitter and also echoed the calls for self-quarantine.

Your reopening questions, answered: Is it safe to go to the pool during COVID-19? Can grandkids visit?

"Anyone who didn't practice CDC, DHSS, and KCMO Health Department social distancing guidance should self quarantine for 14 days if they have any compassion for others," Archer said in a tweet Monday.

Camden County Sheriff Tony Helms said in a statement Monday that public health violations fall under the jurisdiction of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and that his department had no authority to enforce actions surrounding social distancing.

"We expect residents and visitors alike to exhibit personal responsibility at the lake," Helms said in a statement. "We also respect the right of citizens to move freely around the lake and take responsibility to protect themselves from any dangers related to COVID-19."

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services director Randall Williams cautioned that "COVID-19 is still here" and reminded the public in a Memorial Day message.that close contact even outside can lead to transmission.

"The virus can be transmitted even among those young and healthy who aren’t experiencing symptoms," Williams said. "When they then carry the virus and transmit it to a more vulnerable person, this is when we tend to see the long-lasting and tragic impact of these decisions that are being made.”

The pool party grabbed national attention over the weekend after a video was posted to Twitter by Scott Pasmore, an Arizona anchor for KTVK-3TV, with the caption: "No covid concerns at the lake of the ozarks." It had 17.9 million views as of Tuesday morning.

Many on social media have responded to the video with concern, while others celebrated the fact that people are out.

"It screws it up for the rest of us who are taking this pandemic seriously...their negligent behavior affects us ALL," one Twitter user commented.

"Great to see this," another wrote. "The lockdown was the single worst public policy decision in the history of our country."

Crowded locations shown in photos and videos appeared to resemble Coconuts Caribbean Beach Bar & Grill and Backwater Jack's, the latter of which advertised a "Zero Ducks Given Party" for Saturday.

Calls to both places to verify the posts and to request comment Sunday were unsuccessful or declined.

A person who answered the phone at Coconuts who identified themselves as a personal assistant to the owner said that "people are just happy to be out on the lake." .

Just heard on the radio that the latest CDC numbers for C19 IFR is 0.26%. 48% of deaths are patients in convalescent and nursing care homes. Just looking at those numbers was it really worth shutting the entire economy down? In other words, if someone were to tell you last fall that this upcoming flu season is going to be almost twice as bad as previous flu seasons, would you expect a full nationwide shutdown?

Memorial Day weekend traffic at airports was up significantly from recent weeks.

The Transportation Security Administration says it screened about 1.5 million people between Thursday and Monday. That is still about 12.6% of the 12.2 million people it screened over the same period last year.

But those five days also included three days — Thursday, Friday, and Monday — with more than 300,000 people screened. Thursday was the first time since March 23 that the agency has screened more than 300,000 people.

The day with the highest volume was Friday. TSA said it screened 348,673 people that day, still just 12.5% of the 2.8 million people it saw that day last year.

The number of travelers has been climbing in recent weeks as many state and local governments relax stay at home policies.

Remember back in the middle of April I told you guys that we would have more than 100,000 deaths and it wouldn't even be close. And that I ever expected 100k before June 1st. Some of you said I was an idiot and disputed the math. I was advising everyone the models predicting 50k or 60k deaths only total was grossly incorrect.

Well, it's May 26th and here we are, 100K+ deaths in USA now.
