You can’t build an offensive line that is going to be robust after loosing its three best players. Veach didn’t make a mistake. He got unlucky.
Exactly.

Do you know how expensive this "better than MVS" receiver would be? Because it wouldn't be cheap.

Also if Odzune was to somehow fall into the area of 15-17, I seriously doubt he would, that would be worth jumping up to get in my opinion.

You're not replacing that. So get used to being closer to what the last two years were, which was still a #1 and #9 offense.
It’s also why the Chiefs need to have more Rice-type of successes with drafting WR’s… it the most low cost and high talent option realistically available rather than trying to fix the WR position in free agency.

100%

Overpaying for "meh" players is the quickest way to sink the ship, other than just being terrible in the draft.

I think the main point is it’s nowhere near our potential. As long as kelce is healthy we’re really 1-2 pieces away from being substantially better on offense. But we saw what a different offense this is when kelce is even 80% let alone if he sees any kind of regression so the bar is higher. We’ve got to prepare for life with a lesser kelce asap. We may not create fireworks again but our offenses ceiling is much much higher.

I think last year we made it work on offense but we were very clearly actively trying to not target guys on the field and that’s not ideal. We can’t revolve our offense around kelce and rice or bust. And I think we’re capable of way better against tough defenses like sf and Baltimore. Because man, when you look at how insanely open guys like mecole were getting, it shows that defenses just didn’t respect our guys and even more how much this offense opens up if those guys can do the very bare minimum.

Not entirely true, but I get your point.

Honestly, MVS was SO bad last year I honestly believe it wouldn't take much to improve there. You certainly don't need to spend 8 figures to do so.

Paying $12 million for a $10 million player isn't going to hurt as badly as paying $25 million for a $14 million player.

I mean it does seem fair to point out that we 'survived' the MVS contract to the tune of 2 championships. And the absolute disaster that was the Clark trade/extension for 2 as well.

We can afford to extend here and there. There's not a perfectly clean cap sheet in the entire NFL. If you get a quality player and overpaid by 20% for him, you'll probably be fine.

It's the big swings/misses that'll get ya.

Ridley at $19 million/season presents quite a bit more risk than Brown at $14 million/season would if the respective structures were similar, for instance.

I think you need 2 guys. A speed option and a reliable guy with a great route tree. With rice in the picture we may be able to be a little more thrifty with these guys. But I do think we get lots of value from taking at least 1 decent side swing.

And to add on - unless we just smash the next two-three drafts when it comes to offensive skills players, it's going to be hard to replicate the offense of even 2022 when we lost Reek.

The 34 year old dude that makes this entire thing work is slowly losing a step.

There's nothing wrong with being the #9 offense. We all need to accept it, because it's probably the reality for a while.

I mean if Mahomes is gonna play worse than he normally does, like he did in the '23 regular season, then yeah #9 will become normal.

And I think his dip in play was tied to a lack of trust in his teammates around him - but all the same, his process was worse.

It makes sense for Brown to sign a one year deal if he wants to parlay a big season with Mahomes into a bigger payday into the 20 per year range. You can argue it’s risky for the Chiefs to sign him to 3 for 16 each, but if he ends up being a 1100 to 1200 yard receiver in years two and three he’s a huge bargain. Right now we are looking at drafting a WR pretty high three years in a row. Eventually that will hurt us elsewhere.

Yeah, I can't get on board with this.

I think Ridley is infintely more talented than Brown.

And at the other end, I don' think the guys you can pay $4-5M are that much less talented than Brown.

You either pay for the most talent, or you make a cheaper option (I'm still gonna bang the drum for DPJ) work for you.

But man, these middle ground/half measures are not attractive to me at all.
