Let's talk about the 49ers (Super Bowl Edition)

Well Chiefs vs Packers is what I had hoped for, but that's not happening.

Let's talk about Chiefs vs 49ers here.

They played an injured team.

Half our Oline was out, no WRs, Mahomes was gimpy on one leg, and the defense was still getting rid of SuttonAIDS.

You have 60 minutes left in your season and nothing you put on tape is going to matter next season. Let it all hang out. If Shanahan finds a way to exploit the the absence of Thornhill and the heavy feet of our LB corps by passing over the middle to build a lead, he should keep doing that, IMO. If he's dialing up runs that are breaking off the edges and THAT'S how they get the lead, then he'll obviously keep doing that.

I'd say the time for switching horses mid-stream is past us and that includes Andy. If you have a 13 point lead in the 2nd half because you were slinging the ball, then keep slinging the damn ball.

The key to milking a lead isn't just running the football and snapping with 2 seconds on the play clock. It's getting 1st downs. And if you're getting those in the air, keep get'n 'em.
Seems like basic common sense, doesn't it? There must be a stat somewhere that says your chance of winning goes up with the grind out three runs and punt most of the time. Problem is "most of the time" doesn't take into consideration the teams on the field, or the players. When Mahomes and crew can score the way they do, a 21 pt 4th quarter lead is not safe unless you can chew up most of the clock. That takes 1st downs as you note.

Well, to be fair about Montana, he was frequently injured and Young ended up getting the MVP the year before Joe went to KC (92) and they won a Super Bowl the year after (94). Joe was great in KC in '93 but even that year he missed some time with injuries and '94 was pretty bad in that regard. It was just time.

Also, Montana requested the trade because there was a major split with teammates and front offices people about whether Young or Montana should start in '93 so he really wasn't forced out.

I can't claim with any specificity that it was Cam Erving getting beat or Cam Erving stepping on Mahomes to injure said ankle, but if you just tossed that out there independent of any further evidence, you're about 80% likely to be right.

Jesus **** was Cam Erving bad...

Alexcuses? From you? But seriously, that makes sense. Several KC posters have noted an inflection point for your defense around that time, which suggests people buying into and excelling in Spagnuolo's scheme. Can the 49ers play Week 5 KC?

It as just a weird game we were playing with a skeleton crew. Byron Pringle was the primary weapon in that game. When you think about games we lost this year that might be instructive as to who the Chiefs are today, the Colts game isn't one. The Green Bay game isn't either. Really just the Texans and Titans games, and we've beaten both those teams since then.

An opponent should put a lot more emphasis on games after the bye week this year, because everything before that was a bit patchwork.

I was being facetious. KC's only concern with the weather is its players thinking they're on vacation.

If Montana hadn't taken the late helmet-to-helmet hit in Buffalo during the AFCCG in Jan 1994, I think he would've had a better 1994 season. He never fully recovered from that hit, which was like a train wreck. If he hadn't have taken that hit, I feel like he would have not had a better 1994, but even possibly came back for his final year of the contract in 1995...which probably would've been a Super Bowl year in that regard. The defense was that good in 1995.

Unrelated question.

Were you a monumental prick and/or perpetual Smith ball-washer for some period of time? I have like 8 people on ignore, 6 of those are probably just dupe troll accounts and then you. I have no recollection of why I blocked you, but you must have been a real asshole because I haven't even blocked a few of the functionally reeruned posters we have 'round these parts.

Imma just unblock ya because near as I can tell, you're pretty harmless. I'm just curious what put you there to begin with...

That stuff works against bad teams, but it doesn't work when you face playoff teams who have offenses that can can score even against a good defense, and defenses that can put you in 3rd and long situations or create turnovers.
