Some chatter today about Mahomes drifting too far from the pocket
Thoughts?

Part of the reason that he sometimes has to run for his life is because of those extra deep drops. The deeper he drops, the harder it is for his tackles to engage their rushers squared up. It's an issue that's come up before. Last season Pat even mentioned it and how he needed to work on staying in the pocket instead of dropping out of the bottom of it. And IIRC, that sack was directly attributable to Pat dropping too far back, and not giving Schwartz a chance to block whoever that was. Bosa, I think.
Doesn't matter. Everyone knows about it, and Pat knows he needs to work on it. All's good. |

He stopped doing it as much in the 3/4 quarter when the offense started moving it better

Well this settles it. Our reign is over. Time to pick another QB.

I can’t blame Mahomes for being skittish with this line. Yes, he drifts back a bit too far. Yes our tackles need to do a better job of not getting beat like a drum against fast d-ends (in particular, the Bosa brothers). Somewhere there’s a happy medium, but oddly enough it’s all seemed to work out anyway, so not a big deal IMO. It’s like trying to find the least bit of imperfection in an otherwise perfect QB.

I noticed that too. I don't have an issue with drifting. But if it's used instead of stepping up into a clean pocket, that's a habit that should be changed. Of course we can win without it but better yet if we can just fix it.

I’m sure this has been known to the coaches forever. Film doesn’t lie. No human being is perfect. Or he doesn’t trust the interior line.

I think we set a record or are at the record for number of consecutive Chief victories. I'm not worried.

He ended up taking many of those shots anyway. He would have avoided more shots by stepping up in the pocket more often which he did do in the 2nd half. He's smart enough to make adjustments like this. Hopefully, he adjusts a little sooner next time.

My daughter was born in the middle of the chiefs bears game last season and the chiefs have yet to lose in her lifetime. I joke that she has some chiefs baby magic. We'll see how long this keeps up.
