Connor Embree - 1st Year WR Coach

Kid better button shit up.

Quote:
Connor Embree returns for his fifth season with the Chiefs and enters the 2023 season as the team's wide receivers coach after spending two seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2021-22) and two seasons as a defensive assistant (2019-20).

Embree again worked closely with the wide receiver corps in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach assisting an offense that led the league in receiving yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) passing first downs (272), receptions of 25+ yards (49) and points per game (29.2). Embree helped develop a new group of veteran receivers (JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson) who accounted for over 20 percent of the Chiefs receiving touchdowns. Smith-Schuster led the team's wide receiver group with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three trips to the endzone. Fifth-year receiver Valdes-Scantling had two regular season touchdowns and a career-high two postseason touchdowns. He stepped up big as the team battled through injuries in the AFC Championship Game, with 116 yards receiving off six receptions, three catches of 25+ yards and one touchdown en route to the team's Super Bowl LVII win.

In 2021, Embree worked primarily with the wide receivers group. WR Tyreek Hill recorded a career high 111 receptions for 1,239 yards en route to his sixth Pro Bowl nomination. WR Mecole Hardman ranked third on the team, recording career highs in catches (59) and yards (693).

In 2020, Embree primarily worked with the defensive backs who featured AP All-Pro S Tyrann Mathieu who led all safeties in the NFL with six interceptions and rookie CB L'Jarius Sneed who showed a lot of potential in the nine games he saw action (six starts). He snagged three interceptions, 2.0 sacks (-19.0 yards) and seven passes defensed.

In his first season with the Chiefs (2019), Embree primarily worked with a linebacking group that accounted for 5.5 sacks and 275 tackles in his role as a defensive assistant. LB Anthony Hitchens led the team in tackles with 88 and was responsible for 2.0 of the unit's 5.5 sacks.

Before jumping to the professional ranks, he spent two seasons on Coach David Beaty's staff at the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant where he gained experience working with the offense and special teams.

He also spent time in the high school ranks as the offensive coordinator at Blue Valley West High School and as the wide receivers coach at Fairview High School.

Embree played wide receiver for the Kansas Jayhawks (2011-13). He also spent one season at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2010).

Education: University of Kansas (B.S. 2013). Born: Superior, Colorado. Family:Wife - Alex.

College Career as WR
Quote:

High School: Was a quarterback as a senior in high school… Played free safety and recorded three interceptions as a junior… Earned second-team all-Eastern Kansas League honors… Was a three-year letterwinner… Also played basketball.

Personal: Born in Superior, Colo… Son of Natalyn and Jon Embree… Has one brother and one sister… Father served as the head coach at Colorado (2011-12), and has made assistant coaching stops at Colorado and UCLA in college football and the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins in the NFL… Brother, Taylor, played football at UCLA… Plans to major in communications… Would like to be a football coach… Main hobby is playing video games.

"They [Veach/Reid] believe they have been sloppy the last couple weeks with the WR's..."

Being fair with him means we judge him stronger after the bye, but I’m having a hard time seeing where he has done anything but regress this WR group.

He has one first and 2 second talents at the position…each with their own differing skill set. On top of that, he has 2 vet WRs and the best guy in history throwing to them.

Better start showing us the money, man.

Nice thread. Maybe it's time to deploy more assets to WR coaching. (Bonus: No draft or cap implications that way.) Not many other choices at this point.

Wr woes aren’t because of a lack of coaching. It’s because of a lack of talent.. Rice is getting better.. is it coaching?? This place sometimes..

I mean, you run routes and catch a ball.

If you need coaching to correct drops or gain seperation you are a piece of shit that shouldn't be in the NFL in the first place.

I can't completely agree or disagree as I'm not at the team practices/meetings. But at this point, there aren't many other viable options. Right? So why not try to improve the coaching? Maybe one argument for better coaching is that multiple WRs seem to be struggling... Did the Chiefs whiff on all of those struggling WRs? I know there's been some discussion on the play calling. Is that impeding the passing game? If so, that would also be a coaching issue that needs to be addressed. Still happy to be 6-2, but I'm starting to have memories of the catching prowness of the Jonathans: Hayes (TE) and Baldwin (WR). Yikes.

Embree is not the problem. Coaching is not the problem. The problem is scouting and drafting WRs that aren't good/talented enough to play effectively in the NFL. At the end of the day, chickenshit is really just chickenshit, no matter how much you want it to taste like chicken salad.

Simple.
