I would also think that this is Thuney’s last year so perhaps some of his money goes to Smith if they indeed extend him and Creed.

That's what I'd be worried about actually. Is if Mahomes is making these decisions and not the front office.

That said, we won a SB with Nick Allegretti (with one arm). Won another with Austin Reiter at C. Ultimately the IOL is the thing you can best scheme around. And Donald's retired, Reader is aging, Chris Jones ain't someone we have to deal with - there aren't a ton of truly impactful DTs out there at the moment. Dexter Lawrence is a monster at the 0-tech; one of the most unique matchup problems in football. Quinnen Williams is Chris Jones Light - excellent player for an NFC team that may/may not be a playoff team. Derrick Brown - run stuffer; plays for a shit team. Cameron Heyward -- Meh. Older and as likely as not to fall off a cliff. Bucker - declining quickly, still a good player on a potential playoff team. Simmons - potentially excellent but inconsistent. A problem if he's engaged Jalen Carter - Monster talent, plays for a good team; a guy you worry about. Hargrave - holder, pass rush specialist. Another potential headache. Madubuike - first time he's ever really been a dynamic player last year and a potential problem if that's his new baseline. Wilkins -- wouldn't mention but/for him going to a division rival. Might be damn good as a 3-tech. So in terms of real headaches you have Madubuike, Wilkins, Carter, Hargrave and Williams? I dunno - it isn't something to hand-waive but it seems unlikely that it needs to be something we allocate a metrick ****-ton of capital to avoid. |

Are people really bitching about the Chiefs extending our stud o-lineman who protect Mahomes? Spend money on that all day! If you're gonna overpay somebody, do it there. Any other priority is at best a distant second.

Also worth mentioning could be that a negotiating tactic. "We want to re-sign both..." in an attempt to get both of them to almost negotiate against other. "Hey Creed, if Trey signs first it might put us in a bind here..."

But...... we probably will never get an explanation as to why the 4th Chiefs player, whoever it is, didn't get the new contract and was allowed to go to FA. |

It could be done. Whether you want to or not is the question.
Typically, you don't want more than 2 big contracts on your O-Line at the same time. This year, we got Taylor and Thuney. Could move on from Thuney after this year and Morris or Nourzad would likely take his spot. You could give Creed and Smith a pretty reasonable first year cap hit to accommodate the big # for Taylor in 2025. But you're saying goodbye to Taylor after Creed and Smith's number jumps up in 2026. So you'd be lookin for a new RT then. And this is all assuming King works out at LT and you have him on a rookie contract for a few years. This is also assuming Smith is willing to take a 'fair market' contract and not re-set the guard market, which he may be () if he wants to stay in KC with his best buddy and win Super Bowls. So, a lot of moving parts there. So, yeah, it could work out, but . . . . . |

They've got their LT on a rookie 2nd round deal.
And their current RT is payed well, but likely won't be here that much longer than another year or two. So it would line up fine. |

Right or left is fine because you can shift protections as needed, but I don't love the idea of loading up the G/C spot and cutting corners at both OT positions. |
