I watched San Francisco/Baltimore again last night.

The Ravens did a masterful job disguising where their pressure was coming from and messing with Purdy’s programmed reads.

And yes, two of his picks in that game were tipped passes, but he threw at least one more that should have been intercepted (it hit the defender in the face mask) and another that really should have been (ball placed behind Samuel on a slant, tipped by him, hit DB in both hands).

This San Francisco offense is the same design it has always been; it just has better skill position talent than Shanahan has had. And Purdy is slightly better than Garroppolo.

If you get them off script or mess with the QB’s initial reads, you’re in business.

And Spagnuolo, whose defenses have consistently performed well against the Shanahan/McVay school of offense, is one of the best around at messing with reads and getting teams off script.

And I don't believe there's enough of a glaring weakness (like the decimated offensive line in the Tampa Super Bowl) on this team for them to overcome it.

I never make predictions, but I definitely like our chances on Sunday.
I feel like winning a championship needs three things:
  • The better coaching staff
  • The better QB
  • The better defense

You can win with two, but a team with all three should be heavily favored. We have all three this year for our first time in a Super Bowl. I feel pretty good about our chances.

Purdy's smug arrogance (and it just drips out of him) annoys me because he seems to think he's had things hard in SF.

Guy was favored in every game this year because the talent he has around him FAR outstrips his opponents. And he's faced mediocre, at best, defenses for most of the season and all of the playoffs.

Dude - do you really think you've seen ANYTHING that's going to help you out Sunday? Anything at all? I mean, apart from the strafing you got from Baltimore and even then, Baltimore's defense isn't as varied as ours. Moreover, I still don't think it's as GOOD as ours and I think the AFCCG supported that.

Put your humble hat on kid, because you haven't seen anything like you'll see Sunday.

Ben Solak with The Ringer mentioned this. Purdy's great numbers against the blitz this year are inflated by the fact that so many teams play the Niners with 5 down linemen to combat the condensed formations and running attack. Those are considered blitzes in the stats, but they're not really designed to pressure the QB.

If you look at snaps on which Purdy sees at least one defensive back rusher, he's still good, just not MVP-savant-generational-talent good, as Niners fans claim. He's fourth in success rate, and 12th in EPA. But he's pressured on 50% of those dropbacks.

And the Chiefs lead the league in unblocked pressures and pressures generated when blitzing.

Kurt Warner did his latest SB video about his namesake Fred Warner and how the niners leave him on an island in the middle of the field. He showed clips of teams spreading out the RB's as a decoy and forcing coverage over there which leave big holes for short passes and makes Warner have to guess right and get baited into mistakes. The more you look at this SF defense the more I think about what Alex Smith said.."They don't present a lot of volume".

The offense revolves around McCaffery. Simple as that.

Saw stat the SF offense uses condensed formations more than any other team, and KC leads league in pressures (specifically from CBs) against those formations...

McDuffie is one of the key players of the whole football game. He can make that game altering play.

SF also struggled this year against good AFC opponents which doesn’t bode well in a SB.

It was fun to re-watch that game but man the area that REALLY stood out was the improvement in the LBs.

The secondary is better as well, but that secondary had peak Mathieu, Breeland playing very good ball, Fuller playing really well in a safety role and Ward playing at a high level as well. It was, on balance, an average unit.

But man, the 4th best LBer on this team (Chenal) is better than the best 'backer on that one (probably Wilson). It's truly incredible how far this LBer corps has come in such a short period of time. That's probably the worst LB corps to ever win an NFL championship and now I think we have arguably the best LB crew in the NFL.

So yeah - try to pick on the LBs. Maybe it works - but I kinda doubt it.

We've gone from a team that was pulling shit out by the hairs on our chinny-chin chin in the postseason (Bills OT win, Bengals OT loss, Bengals FG at gun win, Eagles FG at gun win) to a team that has been kneeling down against MVP candidates and literal MVPS in three straight games.

This team is undeniably more well positioned to win this game more than they were any of the previous Super Bowls. The defense can shut down ANYONE, and taking the pressure off Patrick allows him to focus on making the three or four key plays a game to ice things, rather than being Superman every possession.

We're not going for a repeat, we're going for a THREEPEAT!!!
