Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.
More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists. The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history. The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023. “The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department. You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below. Entitled "Molten Swing" Entitled "The Air up There" Entitled "Ornithology" Entitled "Fountain of Resonance" "Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point. "The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope. "Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it. "Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one. Thoughts? https://fox4kc.com/news/art-projects...inal-revealed/ |

I have been driving my wife to and from the airport since it opened till she get accustomed to driving there. I have negotiated it just fine. As I said I doubt you have negotiated anything but the Mcdonald's drive through in your life.

You don’t need me for validation attempting to convince me that you can successfully drive someone to the airport. I already think you’re amazing. Hate to see you like this.

My wife is working part time as bartender-server with OHM. Ohm manages the leases in the new airport. So far it doesn't look so good for the bars and restaurants. She said the busiest area is the KC Market. I suppose a 5-dollar 2 oz bag of Doritos is a better price for the traveler than real food and drink. Many employees walked in the first few days. She worked at Martin City Brewing on the first opening night. They had about 30 minutes of being a little busy and twiddled their thumbs waiting. She has moved around since where the need arises. Boulevard Brewing has carried a little more traffic. I asked here what a drink costs at Martin City 17.00 bucks for an old-fashioned with house whiskey.
That airport isn't going to pay for itself your food in KC is going to go up in taxes. Ill just eat out in Liberty or Gladstone its just a hop skip and jump from my KCMO homestead. |

I don't use MCI much, but did last Friday. We arrived for an international red-eye flight that departed at 4:16am. We arrived at the airport at 2:30. Nothing opens until 3am.. as in no TSA agents, no ticketing agents, baggage check, etc. So, pro tip.. don't bother arriving any earlier. Before security, you'll find yourself waiting with little or no seating. I felt sorry for some other people we talked to that arrived the suggested 3 hours before their flight and had nowhere to sit.
Once the security agents arrived and began letting people through, the sole X-ray machine they were running the line through broke. They had to move us all to an adjacent X-ray machine that also did not work. The third X-ray machine finally worked correctly. After arriving at the gate, just before boarding the flight, the gate attendant tried unlocking the door to the jetway. That failed, so they had to call maintenance to unlock the door from the outside. Quite a few bugs with the new airport. I hope they get them sorted out soon. The airport does look really nice. I was fine with the old airport, and heard several other people at our gate saying the same thing. Luckily, none of the issue we ran into caused any delay to our flight. |

Do you think they expect their business to be made up of Kansas Citians going to the airport for the sole purpose of eating. Is that a thing? What is happening right now. |

There is no doubt the labor shortage is going to be a challenge for food and beverage options there. It’s a problem in a lot of places but especially an airport where it can be a pain in the ass getting people and business can be very uneven.

My wife's best night in tips is 79 bucks so far her server full time job at the Casino she takes 300 in tips a night on a bad night. She can pull in 600 on a busy night, especially during chiefs games. She works her ass off for it so she can send money to her family in the Phils who still have not recovered from the pandemic. That government doesn't throw pesos at the population. No income you starve then die.

I’m really not quite sure what point you are making. For one, every airport I’ve been has times of having no business throughout the day. Secondly, I’m pretty certain they didn’t build the airport with the idea of attracting locals and instead are planning on having more flights and layovers. If you aren’t happy with the prices that’s just the way airports are. No surprises here. |

Sucks there wasn't more info on how early security opens, yet if someone told me to show up at 1am for a 4am flight, I'd probably laugh at them. Not sure I've ever spent more than 10 or 15 minutes getting bags checked and getting through security at the old airport, and that's when lines are long. |
