*****The Jaylen Watson Thread*****

More to come!

Quote:
Watson was an all-region receiver and also played cornerback at Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia, before moving across the country to play at Ventura College in California. He was a two-time junior college All-American cornerback there, signing with USC for 2019 but not enrolling in school. Watson went to Pullman instead for the 2020 season, earning honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors that fall (13 tackles, two pass breakups in three starts) as well as in 2021, when he posted 31 tackles, two interceptions, three pass breakups and ranked second in the FBS with four fumble recoveries in 12 starts. He opted out of the team's bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft. -- by Chad Reuter
Quote:
Overview-- by Lance Zierlein
Watson is big and strong. He can be a physical presence when he's playing with patience from press coverage. With just two years of experience at the FBS level, he's predictably raw with his fundamentals, but the lack of agility and short-area quickness should be more than just short-term concerns. Currently, he's unable to stay in phase with quality route runners but does have physical traits that might warrant a practice squad stint for defenses reliant upon Cover 2 and/or Cover 3 schemes.
Strengths
-Good size, strength and length.
-Fought through adversity to find an FBS home.
-Developmental traits for zone-heavy units.
-Displayed improved fundamentals in 2021.
-Very physical in bullying the release from press.
-Strong punch drives through wideout's shoulders.
-Overwhelms catch point on contested catches.
-Willing hitter with plus strength in run support.
Weaknesses
-Impatient and often overextends in matching release in press.
-Lacks foot agility and quickness for man coverage.
-Footwork through transitions is sloppy and slow.
-Gets routed out of position fairly easily.
-Looked overmatched against USC wideouts.
-Doesn't trust his eyes just yet.
-Takes poor angles and lacks a credible burst to close on throws.
-Doesn't find the football in downfield route phase.

Underrated play that may not get much notice.

Watson's tackle on on 2nd and 10 inside the 1 minute mark was freakin' enormous.

A) He kept him in bounds so Oakland had to burn their last timeout.
B) By bringing up 3rd and 1 (the Adams play that was overturned) with no timeouts, the Raiders needed to throw to convert.

If Renfrow gets out of bounds to save that timeout, the Raiders almost certainly run it to convert then use the timeout. And obviously if he converts the first, that changes everything.

Now Renfrow made it possible by unnecessarily going to ground (I thought the ball placement from Carr was fine), but for Watson to get up there and wrap his ass before tackling him to ensure he couldn't pull himself out of bounds or get that extra yard to convert is just damn strong play.

Honestly, there's a really good chance we lose that game if Watson doesn't stick him as soon as he gets there to both prevent the 1st down AND keep him in bounds. Really a big time play that nobody will remember going forward.

Mentioned this in the Joshua Williams thread - if McDuffie lives up to his 1st round pick then Veach snagged 3 good CBs in this draft. 3 CBs who are going to be on rookie deals for the next 4 years.

He also got Bryan Cook, who looked really solid the last few weeks. He gave up the TD to Adams, but his recovery was really nice on that play. A perfect pass beat him there, but that's going to happen to everyone.

And Bush was slow to rotate on the throw to Adams that he bobbled for the incompletion. I believe Cook was in the concussion protocol at the time.

I think Bush is a steady player but with what we have invested into Cook - we need him to be able to develop into a guy who can do that job and make sure that he's NOT late to close that space because we got lucky there. Carr put a little too much on an extremely easy throw.

A faster read/react there and you're able to make a play on the ball rather than rely on Carr overcooking it. Because the elite guys are going to make that pass 9 times out of 10.

Exactly. Even though it turned out to be a TD, I loved the way Cook turned his head and tracked that pass. He was in great position, Carr just threw a freaking perfect pass to one of the best WRs in the game. Some times you just have to tip your hat.

That int was crazy. 1 hand all the way.

Was not running it back the right play there or do you guys think he should have tried to run it back?
