I'm flabbergasted that the Spanos' did this. In the past 32 years the Chargers have had 2 real coaches - Bobby Ross and Marty, (RIP - who we all agree was cursed in the playoffs).
Norf doesn't count. The rest were coordinators.

Hell, Id have been happy if they dusted off Jimmy Johnson's 80 year old ass to come in and coach the Chargers. At least he's an actual leader.

This is a great sign for the future of the Chargers, although, who will be the GM? John Spanos was horning in on Tom Telesco's duties for the past few years. It will be interesting to see...

Welcome back Jim.

Yawn, it's the Chargers. They will still be insignificant.

Excellent Hire, he can probably eek out a wildcard birth coming in second in AFC West

Sean Payton just got relegated to 3rd place in the AFC West unless the Raiders have something to say about that

The more I think about it, the more I think Harbaugh made the right choice, even though he's in the same division with both Reid and Payton. He's got a franchise QB, LT and DE, and a decent draft position already in the bag.

He can move off Mack and James, probably break up Allen/Williams somehow, trade down maybe and multiply his picks some, make some decisions about the roster to be compliant, and then draft well.

And he's got first-hand experience watching a lot of these prospects from the sidelines, going over their film, etc. He's going to draft really well in 2024.

He might turn them around more quickly than anyone is currently thinking.

Based on how quickly Harbaugh turned around the Niners, I would not bet against him. I would think he is expecting Andy Reid to retire fairly soon, which potentially makes it much easier to win the division.

Joey Bosa is a “franchise DE”?

If your franchise is the injury report maybe.

Not if Andy's successor is McVay.

I would be very surprised if McVay went to Kansas City, but I would love to see that! Very impressed by the late round WR evaluations on guys like Kupp & Nacua, along with the great scheme & playcalling of course. He seems to have good instincts on hiring DC's as well.

Yeah, I was trying to think if the Chargers had any other DE I was forgetting about. Maybe he was thinking of that rookie LB that was a pretty good pass rusher for them this season?

It may not be as farfetched as one might think. There is a very real trajectory that aligns Stafford and Andy's retirement in say, 3 years. McVay can start over with Rookie McFugstick, or come inherit still in his prime MJ.

It would be awesome. McVay was feeling pretty burned out last year. He said the 2023 Rams team has helped him regain passion for coaching in this sport. I would imagine a chance to coach Mahomes would be hard to turn down. But what would the Chiefs have to give the Rams in order to get McVay?

As presently constructed, the Chargers' roster is wildly overrated. I don't see this team being a ready-made contender the way they're usually discussed. Who do they have on offense? Williams might not be back and is coming off of a bad injury, Keenan Allen is at the age when production really begins to fall off, and QJ looked like a complete bust. Ekeler is also washed and they don't have a difference making tight end. And that's not even discussing their defense, which was a disaster last year as all of their players on that side regressed.

But it does look like they're putting together a competent staff, which they're borrowing heavily from Baltimore. Jesse Minter came up with the Ravens before going to Michigan and arguably doing a better job than Mike Macdonald, and he seems to be the DC for LAC. And it looks like their preferred GM candidate is Joe Horitz, who has been in the Ravens' front office for 25 years and is an integral part of the Ravens' scouting success. Baltimore West isn't the worst idea, although other franchises have tried to do that and it hasn't really translated.

Getting rid of Staley for Jim Harbaugh might be like the Jaguars getting rid of Urban Meyer and replacing him with Doug Pederson. But even though that helped Lawrence in the way it might help Herbert, it's not like that has been enough to include the Jaguars in the conversation with the top AFC teams. The conference is loaded and there's not much room for error.

I ultimately think it’ll take a couple years, but I hope Jim does well enough that it holds Denver back. There’s gonna be competition in the division and that’s good for us but, I love to watch Denver fail, and would just prefer that continue and maybe this helps the cause.
